Trap-and-transport of migratory fish is commonly used to bypass in-river obstructions. On the River Conon in Scotland, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts are transported around two hydropower facilities. Smolt release occurs during daylight, when predation rates can be high. A novel automatic release cage (ARC) was designed to release smolts at night. Smolts were fitted with acoustic tags (n = 99) to compare survival. High post-release mortality was identified in the day-release group, with night-release survival >40% higher. ARCs can provide fishery managers with a cost-effective and reliable method of improving smolt survival.

Background: There is an urgent need for neuropsychological screening tests that are easily deployed and reliable. We have developed a digital neuropsychological screening protocol that is administered on a tablet, automatically scored using artificial intelligence, and requires approximately 10 minutes to administer. This tablet-administered protocol assesses the requisite neurocognitive constructs associated with emergent neurodegenerative illness METHOD: The digital protocol was administered to 77 ambulatory care/ memory clinic patients (Table1).

Objective: Breast cancer detection is critical for timely and effective treatment, and automatic detection systems can significantly reduce human error and improve diagnosis speed. This study aims to develop an accurate and robust framework for classifying breast cancer into benign and malignant categories using a novel machine learning architecture.
Methods: We propose a dense-ResNet attention integration (DRAI) architecture that combines DenseNet and ResNet models with three attention mechanisms to enhance feature extraction from the BreakHis dataset.

Hormonal mechanisms associated with cell elongation play a vital role in the development and growth of plants. Here, we report Nextflow-root (nf-root), a novel best-practice pipeline for deep-learning-based analysis of fluorescence microscopy images of plant root tissue from A. thaliana.

We develop a novel method for image segmentation of 3D confocal microscopy images of emerging hematopoietic stem cells. The method is based on the theory of persistent homology and uses an optimal threshold to select the most persistent cycles in the persistence diagram. This enables the segmentation of the image's most contrasted and representative shapes.

Background: Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) is a promising noninvasive parameter for intracranial pressure (ICP) assessment. However, in the setting of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), several previous studies have reported no association between ultrasonically measured ONSD and ICP. In this study, we evaluate ONSD in patients with aSAH using a novel method of automated real-time ultrasonographic measurements and explore whether factors such as having undergone surgery affects its association to ICP.
