Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a severe neurological injury during infancy, often resulting in long-term cognitive deficits. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of Edaravone (EDA), a free radical scavenger, and elucidate the potential role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in mediating these effects in neonatal HIE rats. Using the Rice-Vannucci model, HIE was induced in neonatal rats, followed by immediate administration of EDA after the hypoxic-ischemic insult.

Purpose Of Review: The use of body composition to assess the quality of infant growth may add valuable information to pediatric clinical care. Preterm infants have differences in their fat and muscle mass development compared with infants born at term, which may be related to their early nutritional exposures. Subpial hemorrhage (SPH) is a rare but significant cause of neonatal seizures and respiratory distress, primarily affecting full-term infants without apparent risk factors. We report the case of a full-term newborn who presented with recurrent episodes of apnea, desaturation, and seizures shortly after birth. MRI revealed an acute hemorrhagic collection in the left temporal region, accompanied by cortical cytotoxic edema.

The right venous valve is critical to the proper development of the fetal heart. As the right venous valve degenerates later in fetal development, residual structures can remain, such as the terminal crest, Eustachian valve, Thebesian valve, and a prominent Chiari network, with a sail-like appearance resembling a spinnaker. While these structures are often incidentally found on adult echocardiograms, we present a case of a term neonate with hypoxia secondary to a persistent right valve of the sinus venosus.
