The copper industry utilizes significant amounts of sulfuric acid in its processes, generating sulfate as waste. While sulfate-reducing bacteria can remove sulfate, it produces hydrogen sulfide (HS) as a byproduct. This study examined the capability of a consortium consisting of Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans and Sulfobacillus acidophilus to partially oxidize HS to S° at a temperature of 45 °C. A fixed-bed bioreactor, with glass rings as support material and sodium thiosulfate as a model electron donor, was inoculated with the consortium. Formation of biofilms was crucial to maintain the bioreactor's steady state, despite high flow rates. Afterward, the electron donor was changed to HS. When the bioreactor was operated continuously and with high aeration, HS was fully oxidized to SO. However, under conditions of low aeration and at a concentration of 0.26 g/L of HS, the consortium was able to oxidize HS to S° with a 13% yield. S° was discovered attached to the glass rings and jarosite. The results indicate that the consortium could oxidize HS to S° with a 13% yield under low aeration and at a concentration of 0.26 g/L of HS. The findings highlight the capability of a Sulfobacillus consortium to convert HS into S°, providing a potential solution for addressing environmental and safety issues associated with sulfate waste generated by the mining industry.

Whether the catalyst can realize the non-CO pathway is the key to greatly improve the catalytic activity and stability of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). It is feasible to optimize the reaction path selectivity by modifying organic ligands and constructing single-atom systems. At the same time, heterogeneous metal nanosheets with atomic thickness have been shown to significantly enhance the catalytic activity of materials due to their ultra-high exposure of active sites and synergistic effects.

Dilute alloy (DA) catalysts, including single-atom alloys (SAAs), which are comprised of trace amounts of an active promoter metal dispersed on the surface of a selective host metal, offer exceptional activity and selectivity while utilizing precious metals more efficiently. Although most SAA and DA applications have focused on partial hydrogenation and oxidation reactions, their use has steadily expanded into more complex thermo-, photo-, and electro-catalytic processes. This progress has been largely driven by mechanistic insights derived from computational chemistry and is expected to accelerate with the advancement of artificial intelligence.

Red anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) granular sludge (AnGS) has been reported in successfully operating Anammox systems, and its color is associated with sludge activity. However, in long-term operating systems, AnGS exhibits different sensory colors, physical structures, community structures, and denitrification performance, but the relationship between them has not yet been elucidated. The AnGS of the Anammox system, which has been in operation for more than a decade, can be divided into two main categories: red and white.
