Manhattan's Street Trees: An Unfinished Public Health Story.

Am J Public Health

January 2025

John M. Harris Jr is a retired physician executive living in Tucson, Arizona.

Stephen Smith launched a 40-year effort to bring trees to New York City streets in 1872, the year he founded the American Public Health Association (APHA). Smith argued that street trees would mitigate the adverse health effects of Manhattan's summer heat and help purify the air. The young APHA endorsed Smith's position and gave trees a prominent role in urban sanitation, but public health turned away from trees and urban reform movements as it adopted a biomedical public health model in the late 19th century.

Population growth and environmental burden have turned the efforts of cities globally toward smarter and greener mobility. Cooperative and Connected Automated Mobility (CCAM) serves as a concept with the power and potential to help achieve these goals building on technological fields like Internet of Things, computer vision, and distributed computing. However, its implementation is hindered by various challenges covering technical parameters such as performance and reliability in tandem with other issues, such as safety, accountability, and trust.

Investigation of the quality of tea during Grain Rain period by sensory evaluation, objective quantitative indexes and metabolomics.

Food Chem X

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Tea Plant Biology and Utilization, Anhui Agricultural University, 130 Changjiang West Road, Hefei, Anhui 230036, PR China.

Article Synopsis
  • * Sensory evaluation and computer analysis showed improved liquor color and taste during GRP, with reduced astringency and bitterness, leading to a greener hue and better flavor.
  • * Non-targeted metabolomics identified changes in amino acids and flavonoids during GRP, helping to establish nine key metabolites as indicators of tea quality transformation.

There is a surprisingly strong effect on color appearance when low levels of luminance contrast are added to visual targets in which only S-cones are modulated. This phenomenon can be studied with checkerboard patterns composed of alternating S-cone-modulated checks and gray checks. + S checks look purple when surrounded by slightly brighter gray checks but look highly desaturated (lavender, almost white) when surrounded by darker gray checks.
