Article Abstract

Millions of people worldwide live with corneal opacity, which continues to be one of the leading causes of blindness. Corneal opacity is treatable. However, the surgical methods for treating this condition, such as corneal transplantation and keratoprosthesis, have many complications. The use of an intraocular projector is a promising approach to treat corneal blindness. Like any device using electrical power, an intraocular projection device produces heat, which could potentially damage eye tissue. Australian and international standards state that there cannot be an increase of temperature of 2 °C caused by an implanted device. In order to determine if these standards are met, a 2D axisymmetric thermal analysis of the projector in the human eye is conducted in ANSYS Workbench. With the projector operating at its maximum wattage, our analysis shows that an air gap extension within the projector will help maintain the temperature increase below 2 °C.

Background: The development of heat transfer devices used for heat conversion and recovery in several industrial and residential applications has long focused on improving heat transfer between two parallel plates. Numerous articles have examined the relevance of enhancing thermal performance for the system's performance and economics. Heat transport is improved by increasing the Reynolds number as the turbulent effects grow.

This article analyses the use of low-temperature PCMs in devices supplementing a room ventilation system to prevent the overcooling effect. In this study, the phase change is numerically simulated in an axisymmetric system consisting of two tubes. One is filled with RT11HC with an initial temperature of 0 °C, while air with an inlet temperature of 20 °C flows through the other, heating the PCM and causing it to melt.

This work studies numerically the development of adiabatic shear banding (ASB) during high strain-rate compression of AISI 1045 steel. Plane strain and cylindrical axisymmetric compressions are simulated in LS-DYNA, considering rectangular and cylindrical steel samples, respectively. Also, a parametric analysis in height-to-base ratio is conducted in order to evaluate the effect of geometry and dimensional ratio of the sample on ASB formation.

This paper examines the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling behavior of layered transversely isotropic media under axisymmetric and plane strain conditions by utilizing the transformed differential quadrature method (TDQM), taking groundwater into consideration. Initially, the coupled governing equations of layered transversely isotropic media in multi-dimensional coordinate systems are established with considering the influence of groundwater levels. Subsequently, appropriate integral transform methods are applied to derive ordinary differential equations under different coordinate systems.

Static bending responses of a pressurized composite cylindrical shell made of a copper matrix reinforced with functionally graded graphene origami are studied in this paper. The kinematic relations are extended based on a new higher-order shear and normal deformation theory in the axisymmetric framework. The constitutive relations are extended for the composite cylindrical shell where the effective modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, thermal expansion coefficient and density are estimated using the Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model and the rule of mixture.
