The adsorption behaviors of CO and H to FeO onto CaO surfaces have been studied using the density functional theory (DFT) to determine the reactions of FeO by CO and H. The adsorption mechanisms of FeO clusters on the CaO(100) and CaO(110) surfaces were calculated first. The structure of the Ca(110) surface renders it highly chemically reactive compared with the Ca(100) surface because of low coordination. After gas adsorption, CO bonds to the O atom of FeO, forming CO compounds in both configurations through the C atom. H favors the O atom of FeO, forming HO compounds and breaking the Fe-O bond. Comparing the adsorption behavior of two reducing gases to FeO on the Ca surface, the reaction of the CO molecule being adsorbed to generate CO compounds is exothermic. The reaction of H molecule adsorption to generate HO compounds is endothermic. This property is essential for the inertial-collision stage of the reduction. However, the dissociation of the CO compound from the reaction interface will overcome a high energy barrier and slow down the reduction. The HO compound dissociates from the surface more easily, which can accelerate the reduction.

Glucan, a recognized prebiotic primarily derived from fungi, bacteria, and plants, possesses significant nutritional value and biological activity. It serves as a thickener and emulsifier stabilizer, enhancing the texture and sensory properties of food. This study aimed to compare the inhibitory effects of glucans from yeast, oats, and bacteria on energy intake by characterizing their physicochemical properties and evaluating their impact on fat and glucose adsorption, starch and fat digestion in vitro, and glucose tolerance in vivo.

The recycling of waste wheat straw into biochar for soil improvement is a promising, sustainable strategy to enhancing nutrient-poor soils. Biochar application to soil has been shown to enhances the activity of key enzymes involved in nutrient cycling, such as invertase (INV), urease (URE), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which play roles in carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) cycling, as well as catalase (CAT), an enzyme with redox properties. However, the kinetic behavior of these enzymes remains largely unexplored.

Microcystins (MCs) is one of the most commonly toxic cyclic heptapeptide cyanotoxins with a variety of congeners in aquatic environments. Different MC congeners exhibit different toxicity; however, successful discrimination of MC congeners in complex samples remains challenging. Herein, we combine efficient enrichment of magnetic imprinting and precise discrimination of fluorescence sensor arrays, constructing a new strategy to distinguish MC congeners (MC-LR, MC-RR, and MC-YR).

A novel parameterization of a self-consistent charge density functional-based tight-binding scheme (SCC-DFTB) to characterize gold (Au)-water hybrid systems by developing new pair parameters for (Au, O, H-X where X = Au, O, H) using the DFTB module of Material Studio 2020 is introduced. To characterize Au-water systems within the DFTB framework, the derived parameters are systematically compared with DFT-DMOL3 and DFTB-AuOrg (existing library of DFTB) data for Au clusters ( = 2, 4, 8, 25, and 34), Au mono layer surfaces ( = 7, 19, 25, 37, and 49), Au bilayer surface, and Au nanostructures-HO complexes. The geometrical, energetic, and electronic characteristics derived from the newly parametrized library (DFTB-AuOH) for the Au clusters align well with both the DFT-DMOL3 and the DFTB-AuOrg results, demonstrating that the stability of the Au clusters is accurately represented by the existing parameters.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), known for their remarkable porous and well-organized structures, have found extensive use in various applications, including gas storage. Predicting the bulk properties from atomistic simulations as well as gas uptakes and the adsorption mechanism requires the most accurate definition of MOF systems. The application of ab initio molecular dynamics to these extensive periodic systems exceeds the current computational capabilities.
