Considering the Benefits Cliff Embedded in the Relationship between Housing and Health.

This Commentary introduces the reality of the benefits cliff into the housing and health relationship. Improving both housing and health requires addressing the benefits cliff facing extremely low- and low-income people. Those living below the poverty line are at greatest risk of poor, inadequate, and unhealthy living conditions. They are also the group most at risk for losing benefits and economic supports on their journey toward economic self-sufficiency. Addressing the housing crisis in Delaware demands that we recognize the benefits cliff looming on the horizon for extremely low- and low-income families struggling toward self-sufficiency. Effective policies and interventions, at a minimum, need to be informed by the experiences of those struggling to navigate the benefits cliff and achieve economic mobility and need to be integrated across housing, economic benefits, and health care.

Background: Despite the clinical benefits over nonoperative treatment or meniscectomy, the clinical outcomes of surgical repair for medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMRT) remain suboptimal, which may be attributed to the insufficient restoration of meniscal hoop tension during surgery.

Purpose: To analyze the clinical outcomes of surgical repair of MMRT based on the appearance of the meniscal tension observed immediately after surgery.

Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.

While research has suggested that addressing multiple needs simultaneously may increase the chances for positive labor force outcomes, few studies have explored a multi-pronged approach to assist individuals with jumping off the benefits cliff. The purpose of the current study is to explore the potential of a Career Pathway program designed to supplement benefits for those who "jump off the benefits cliff." This study will employ qualitative impact assessment protocol (QuIP) and observational methods to assess the implementation of the career pathway program through (1) observation, (2) focus groups with service providers and program stakeholders, and (3) semi-structured interviews with program participants.

Animals that feed socially can sometimes better locate prey, often by transferring information about food that is patchy, dense, and temporally and spatially unpredictable. Information transfer is a potential benefit of living in breeding colonies where unsuccessful foragers can more readily locate successful ones and thereby improve feeding efficiency. Most studies on social foraging have been short-term, and how long-term environmental change affects both foraging strategies and the associated benefits of coloniality is generally unknown.

Topology-preserving segmentation of abdominal muscle layers from ultrasound images.

Med Phys

December 2024

Division of Life Sciences and Medicine, School of Biomedical Engineering (Suzhou), University of Science and Technology of China, Suzhou, China.

Background: In clinical anesthesia, precise segmentation of muscle layers from abdominal ultrasound images is crucial for identifying nerve block locations accurately. Despite deep learning advancements, challenges persist in segmenting muscle layers with accurate topology due to pseudo and weak edges caused by acoustic artifacts in ultrasound imagery.

Purpose: To assist anesthesiologists in locating nerve block areas, we have developed a novel deep learning algorithm that can accurately segment muscle layers in abdominal ultrasound images with interference.

Importance: The multifaceted nature of screen use has been largely overlooked in favor of a simplistic unidimensional measure of overall screen time when evaluating the benefits and risks of screen use to early childhood development.

Objective: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine associations of screen use contexts in early childhood with cognitive and psychosocial outcomes.

Data Sources: PsycINFO, Embase, MEDLINE Ovid, ProQuest, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception to December 31, 2023.
