Objectives: Yearly rolling aggregate trends or rates are commonly used to analyze trends in overdose deaths, but focusing on long-term trends can obscure short-term fluctuations (eg, daily spikes). We analyzed data on spikes in daily fatal overdoses and how various spike detection thresholds influence the identification of spikes.

Materials And Methods: We used a spike detection algorithm to identify spikes among 16 660 drug-related overdose deaths (from any drug) reported in Massachusetts' vital statistics from 2017 through 2023.

Simulation and assimilation of the digital human brain.

Nat Comput Sci

December 2024

Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-Inspired Intelligence, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Here we present the Digital Brain (DB)-a platform for simulating spiking neuronal networks at the large neuron scale of the human brain on the basis of personalized magnetic resonance imaging data and biological constraints. The DB aims to reproduce both the resting state and certain aspects of the action of the human brain. An architecture with up to 86 billion neurons and 14,012 GPUs-including a two-level routing scheme between GPUs to accelerate spike transmission in up to 47.

Multiplexed, rapid, and accurate virus quantification is of great value in biomedical detection. Herein, we proposed a label-free multiplexed virus screening quantitative biosensor based on color core-shell hydrogel photonic crystal (PhC) barcode integrated rolling circle amplification (RCA). The composite hydrogel shell was formed by acrylic acid and polyethylene glycol diacrylate, and the core silica photonic crystal was used as a detector.

Isothermal amplification (IA) techniques like rolling circle amplification (RCA) and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) have gained significant attention in recent years due to their ability to rapidly amplify DNA or RNA targets at a constant temperature without the need for complex thermal cycling equipment. Such technologies, combined with colorimetric systems rendering visual confirmation of the amplification event, are ideal for the development of point-of-need detection methods suitable for field settings where access to specialized laboratory equipment is limited. The utility of these technologies, thus far limited to DNA and RNA targets, could be broadened to a wide range of targets by using aptamers.

Article Synopsis
  • Despite the growth in vaping, most nicotine cessation research still focuses on traditional cigarette smoking, creating a gap in understanding the unique challenges faced by those quitting vaping.
  • This study aims to analyze discussions from various subreddit forums dedicated to quitting vaping in order to gain insight into the experiences and needs of individuals looking to stop using e-cigarettes.
  • The findings reveal that many posts emphasized seeking and providing social support during the quitting process, with a notable increase in post discussions during the 2019 vaping lung injury crisis; posts about withdrawal symptoms were also frequently mentioned.
