Purpose: Prolonged exposure to broadband light with a short-wavelength (blue) or long-wavelength (orange/red) bias is known to impact eye growth and refraction, but the mechanisms underlying this response are unknown. Thus, the present study investigated the effects of broadband blue and orange lights with well-differentiated spectrums on refractive development and global flash electroretinography (gfERG) measures of retinal function in the chick myopia model.

Methods: Chicks were raised for 4 days with monocular negative lenses, or no lens, under blue, orange, or white light.

Indigenous chickens play a crucial role in the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in rural Ethiopia. This study aimed to phenotypically characterize indigenous chickens in the Liban Jawi district, focusing on measurements of phenotypic characteristics. The multi-stage sampling method selected 192 households with at least two mature indigenous chickens from 2,166 households, resulting in the sampling of 224 chickens (138 females and 86 males) for phenotypic characterization.

Mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase (GOT2) protein as a potential cryodamage biomarker in rooster spermatozoa cryopreservation.

Poult Sci

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Animal Biotech Breeding, Institute of Animal Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing 100193, China. Electronic address:

Spermatozoa cryopreservation has been widely used for animal genetic conservation. Despite advances in chicken semen cryopreservation, the mechanism of spermatozoa cryodamage remains to be revealed. The cryopreservation process induces motion parameter decreased, structure damaged, proteomic and antioxidant system remodeled in spermatozoa.

Gene ontology defines pre-post- hatch energy dynamics in the complexus muscle of broiler chickens.

BMC Genomics

December 2024

Department of Animal Science, The Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 7610001, Rehovot, Israel.

Background: Chicken embryos emerge from their shell by the piercing movement of the hatching muscle. Although considered a key player during hatching, with activity that imposes a substantial metabolic demand, data are still limited. The study provides a bioenergetic and transcriptomic analyses during the pre-post-hatching period.
