Constipation is a complicated condition. Chronic constipation is diagnosed when constipation occurs for more than 3 months. Chronic constipation is classified using patient symptoms and the pathophysiology. New therapeutic agents to treat chronic constipation have recently been approved in Japan. However, treatments for constipation that is refractory to traditional laxatives have been approved, an algorithm for the treatment of chronic constipation has not yet been developed. The accumulation of knowledge and data is necessary to develop a new algorithm.

Objective: Chronic constipation (CC) more frequently affects the elderly; pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) may confuse the appraisal of the pathophysiology of CC. The aim was to characterize colonic transit (CT) in elderly with CC with/without PFD.
Design: We conducted retrospective medical records review of 191 patients ≥ 65 years who underwent scintigraphic CT for assessing CC.

Leaky gut syndrome (LGS) is caused by intestinal epithelial injury and increased intestinal permeability due to a variety of factors, including chronic stress, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, surgery, and chemotherapy, resulting in an increased influx of matter from the intestinal lumen causing constipation and bacteremia. To our knowledge, this is the first known case of LGS along with () bacteremia in a neurodegenerative disease patient. The patient was an 81-year-old male with a history of Alzheimer's disease, cerebral infarction, and diverticulitis in a psychiatric hospital, fed via a nasogastric tube.

Background: This study investigates the role of functional constipation (FC) in predicting the long-term success of Gastric Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (G-POEM) for treating gastroparesis.
Methods: This was a retrospective observational study. Patients who underwent G-POEM between July 2015 and August 2022 with > 6-month follow-up were included.

Opioids are potent analgesics in clinical pain management but exert variable analgesia in different pain types. Opioid-induced constipation is a common side effect of opioid therapy, and whether opioids induce different gastrointestinal motility inhibitions in different pain types is unknown. In this study, we evaluated the antinociceptive effects and inhibition of upper gastrointestinal transit and colonic bead expulsion of morphine, DAMGO, and Deltorphin in mouse CFA chronic inflammatory pain, SNI chronic neuropathic pain, and carrageenan chronic inflammatory pain models.

Objective: Constipation is commonly seen among patients with cardiovascular diseases and is linked to adverse outcomes. However, the association between constipation and the risk of stroke remains conflicting. Therefore, we aim to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the available data on this topic.
