The performance of three algorithms for predicting nominal molecular mass from an analyte's electron ionization mass spectrum is presented. The Peak Interpretation Method (PIM) attempts to quantify the likelihood that a molecular ion peak is contained in the mass spectrum, whereas the Simple Search Hitlist Method (SS-HM) and iterative Hybrid Search Hitlist Method (iHS-HM) leverage results from mass spectral library searching. These predictions can be employed in combination (recommended) or independently. The methods were tested on two sets of query mass spectra searched against libraries that did not contain the reference mass spectra of the same compounds: 19,074 spectra of various organic molecules searched against the NIST17 mass spectral library and 162 spectra of small molecule drugs searched against SWGDRUG version 3.3. Individually, each molecular mass prediction method had computed precisions (the fraction of positive predictions that were correct) of 91, 89, and 74%, respectively. The methods become more valuable when predictions are taken together. When all three predictions were identical, which occurred in 33% of the test cases, the predicted molecular mass was almost always correct (>99%).

Photoiniferter (PI) is a promising polymerization methodology, often used to overcome restrictions posed by thermal reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. However, in the overwhelming majority of reports, high energy UV irradiation is required to effectively trigger photolysis of RAFT agents and facilitate the polymerization, significantly limiting its potential, scope, and applicability. Although visible light PI has emerged as a highly attractive alternative, most current approaches are limited to the synthesis of lower molecular weight polymers, and typically suffer from prolonged reaction times, extended induction periods, and higher dispersities.

Nickel-iron-based catalysts are recognized for their high efficiency in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions, yet the underlying mechanisms that drive their superior performance remain unclear. Herein, we revealed the molecular OER mechanism and the structure-intermediate-performance relationship of OER on a phosphorus-doped nickel-iron nanocatalyst (NiFeP). NiFeP exhibited exceptional activity and stability with an overpotential of only 210 mV at 10 mA cm in 1 M KOH and a cell voltage of 1.

Objectives: Urothelial carcinoma in situ (CIS) with early papillary formation is terminology sometimes used to suggest incipient high-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma (PUC) but may lead to confusion between true CIS and lateral flat spread of PUC.
Methods: It remains unclear how pathologists and urologists interpret this scenario, so a survey was circulated to 68 pathologists (group 1 = 28 academic genitourinary pathologists; group 2 = 17 pathologists with a self-reported genitourinary focus; group 3 = 23 pathologists self-reported as not genitourinary specialists) and 32 urologists.
Results: Regarding atypical urothelial lesions that appear mainly flat but contain possible papillae, group 3 was more likely to label this as CIS compared with groups 1 and 2 (35% for group 3 vs 13% for groups 1 and 2), while groups 1 and 2 more often adopted another descriptive diagnosis, such as "CIS with early papillary features" (38% for groups 1 and 2 vs 13% for group 3).

Hydroxyl radical-based protein footprinting (HRPF) coupled with mass spectrometry is a valuable medium-resolution technique in structural biology, facilitating the assessment of protein structure and molecular-level interactions in solution conditions. In HRPF with X-rays (XFP), hydroxyl radicals generated by water radiolysis covalently label multiple amino acid (AA) side chains. However, HRPF technologies face challenges in achieving their full potential due to the broad (>10) dynamic range of AA reactivity with OH and difficulty in detecting slightly modified residues, most notably in peptides with highly reactive residues like methionine, or where all residues have low OH reactivities.

Prolongation of the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) may signify an intrinsic factor deficiency or the presence of an inhibitor of coagulation, potentially placing a patient at increased risk for bleeding. However, a contact factor (ie, factor XII, prekallikrein, and high molecular weight kininogen) deficiency, which may also cause a prolonged aPTT, is not associated with clinical bleeding. A 71-year-old female had an isolated prolonged aPTT discovered during preoperative laboratory testing.
