Article Synopsis
  • - Reactive arthritis is a type of joint inflammation that typically follows a bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal or urogenital tract, appearing about 1 to 4 weeks later, and usually affects the lower limbs asymmetrically.
  • - Symptoms can also include inflammation at tendon attachment sites (enthesitis), swelling of fingers or toes (dactylitis), and issues like conjunctivitis and oral ulcers.
  • - Treatment starts with antibiotics for the initial infection, followed by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief, with more serious cases sometimes requiring corticosteroids or immunosuppressive medications. Over half of patients see improvement within a few months.
