To obtain the multiproxy paleoenvironmental dataset from southeast Great Hungarian Plain (GHP), 345 sediment samples were collected at one cm intervals from the cores retrieved from Tovisies bed paleochannel, and six samples were analyzed for 14C dates. The obtained radiocarbon dates were calibrated to calendar ages using the IntCal20 calibration curve. Bayesian statistics within the R bacon 2.5.8 age-depth modeling package were used to establish the age-depth model and it represented the time frame for the entire dataset. The obtained polymodal grain size distribution (GSD) data was unmixed into four EMs using the AnalySize v.1.2.0 algorithm, employing the built-in General Weibull function which helped explain the dynamicity of the endmembers' sedimentation process. To understand the alluviation history, the endmember abundances were correlated with LOI55, LOI950, and magnetic susceptibility. The dataset presented in this article could be of potential reuse for studying the spatial-temporal environmental changes and in geoarchaeological research, providing insights into how human societies adapted to environmental shifts across the southeast GHP.

Background: Optimal ventilation strategies and use of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) in neonates and small infants undergoing anaesthesia remain unclear. We examined the association of perioperative ventilation strategies and administration of NMBAs on respiratory adverse events in the NEonate-Children sTudy of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE) cohort.

Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of NECTARINE, which included infants up to 60 weeks' postmenstrual age undergoing anaesthesia for surgical or diagnostic procedures.

Ervin Bauer and the foundations of theoretical biology.

Biosystems

February 2025

Global Mind Share, Norfolk, VA, USA. Electronic address:

Ervin Bauer (1890-1938) outlined the paradigm of theoretical biology in his monograph "Fundamental Principles of Biology as Pure Natural Science and their Applications in Physiology and Pathology" (1920) and further developed these ideas in his book "Theoretical Biology" (1935). In these works, he defined the foundations of theoretical biology from the perspective of biophysics and bioenergetics, formulated the principle of a sustainable non-equilibrium state, which is continuously maintained by all biological systems throughout their life, and developed original views on cell differentiation, adaptation, and evolution. In 1938, Ervin Bauer and his wife Stefánia became the victims of Stalin's Great Terror.

The genetic origin of the Indo-Europeans.

Nature

March 2025

Department of Human Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA.

The Yamnaya archaeological complex appeared around 3300 BC across the steppes north of the Black and Caspian Seas, and by 3000 BC it reached its maximal extent, ranging from Hungary in the west to Kazakhstan in the east. To localize Yamnaya origins among the preceding Eneolithic people, we assembled ancient DNA from 435 individuals, demonstrating three genetic clines. A Caucasus-lower Volga (CLV) cline suffused with Caucasus hunter-gatherer ancestry extended between a Caucasus Neolithic southern end and a northern end at Berezhnovka along the lower Volga river.

Electronic address:

With the development of global trade and the improvement of consumer safety awareness, the problem of pesticide residues in spices has received considerable attention. At the same time, with the advancement of nanotechnology, nanomaterials have shown great potential in pesticide residue detection. Given the wide variety of spices and their complex matrices, there has been a lack of a comprehensive review on the application of nanomaterials in pesticide residue detection in spices until now.
