While established guidelines exist for chirality in tetrahedral molecules, there is a notable absence of clear rules for recognizing metal-centered chirality in higher-coordination complexes. We develop decision trees to assess the likelihood of chirality-at-metal in coordination complexes with coordination numbers 4-9 with mono and bidentate ligands. Using binary decision rules based on shape, ligand type, and quantity, the trees classify complexes as chiral or achiral.

Herein, we report on the synthesis and stereochemistry of mono- and isomeric dinitrile derivatives of [(1,2-CBH)-3,3'-Co] ions. The shape and electronic properties of CN groups can apparently surmount the strain associated with the substitution of two vicinal carbon positions. Owing to electron donation to the cage, this results in a substituent-induced rearrangement of one of the carbon atoms to the upper pentagonal ring.

The intrinsic reversibility of dynamic covalent bonding, such as the furan-maleimide Diels-Alder (DA) cycloaddition reactions, enables reprocessable, self-healing polymer materials that can be reconfigured via the mechanism of solid-state plasticity. In this work, the temperature-dependent exchange rates of stereochemically distinct endo and exo DA bonds are leveraged to achieve tunable, temperature- and stress-activated shape morphing in Diels-Alder polymer (DAP) networks. Through thermal annealing, ≈35% of endo DA isomers are converted in neat DAP networks to the thermodynamically favored exo form, achieving ≈97% exo after complete annealing at 60 °C.

The safety and efficacy of the lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery system are crucial for the successful development of messenger RNA vaccines. We designed and synthesized a series of ketal ester lipids (KELs), featuring a biodegradable ketal moiety in the linker and ester segments in the tail. Through iterative optimization of the head and tail groups of KELs, we tuned the pKa and molecular shapes, and identified (4S)-KEL12 as a safe and efficient ionizable lipid for mRNA delivery.

The interface between chirality and crystallization and mechanisms by which chirality propagates from crystal structure to overall shapes of crystals are a key topic in crystallography and stereochemistry. Recently, nanocrystals attracted attention as useful model systems for this kind of studies. Specifically, tellurium nanocrystals have been used to address questions on relations between chirality of the crystal structure and that of the overall shape.
