Background Bone marrow examination (BME) is an indispensable diagnostic tool to evaluate various hematological and non-hematological disorders. Bone marrow aspirate cytology and bone marrow trephine biopsy, even though performed simultaneously, are assessed at different points in time due to different processing methods. Aims and objective This study aims to assess and compare the role of bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy to formulate an effective and rapid method for diagnosing a wide spectrum of various hematological and non-hematological disorders.

Cabot rings in a cat with myeloproliferative disease.

Vet Clin Pathol

June 2024

Laboratory of Veterinary Small Animal Internal Medicine, Joint Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Kagoshima University, Kagoshima, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • A 6-year-old female Scottish Fold cat presented with lethargy and loss of appetite; lab tests showed severe anemia and changes in red blood cells, including Cabot rings indicating abnormalities in red blood cell production.
  • Despite treatment with medications, blood transfusions, and vitamins, the cat's condition worsened over 42 days, ultimately leading to its death.
  • Necropsy revealed cancerous cells in the bone marrow and other organs, linking the presence of Cabot rings to potential defects in red blood cell production similar to those seen in human cases of anemia and blood disorders.

Folate, an essential vitamin, is a one-carbon acceptor and donor in key metabolic reactions. Erythroid cells harbor a unique sensitivity to folate deprivation, as revealed by the primary pathological manifestation of nutritional folate deprivation: megaloblastic anemia. To study this metabolic sensitivity, we applied mild folate depletion to human and mouse erythroid cell lines and primary murine erythroid progenitors.

Flow cytometry-detected changes in megaloblastic anemia secondary to cobalamin deficiency.

Colomb Med (Cali)

September 2023

Universidad de Concepción, Facultad de Medicina, Departamento de Medicina, Concepción, Chile.

Introduction: Megaloblastic anemias secondary to Vitamin B12 deficiency are a group of pathologies produced by defective nuclear DNA synthesis.

Objective: To describe the maturation alterations found in hematopoietic precursors of the bone marrow in a series of patients with megaloblastic anemia.

Methods: Were included patients attended at the Regional Hospital of Concepción with bone marrow samples sent for the study of cytopenia by flow cytometry whose final diagnosis was megaloblastic anemia.
