The validity of Weyl's law for the Steklov problem on domains with Lipschitz boundary is a well-known open question in spectral geometry. We answer this question in two dimensions and show that Weyl's law holds for an even larger class of surfaces with rough boundaries. This class includes domains with interior cusps as well as "slow" exterior cusps. Moreover, the condition on the speed of exterior cusps cannot be improved, which makes our result, in a sense optimal. The proof is based on the methods of Suslina and Agranovich combined with some observations about the boundary behaviour of conformal mappings.

Coupled unidirectional chaotic microwave graphs.

We experimentally investigate the undirected open microwave network Γ with internal absorption composed of two coupled directed halves, unidirectional networks Γ_{+} and Γ_{-}, corresponding to two possible directions of motion on their edges. The two-port scattering matrix of the network Γ is measured and the spectral statistics and the elastic enhancement factor of the network are evaluated. The comparison of the number of experimental resonances with the theoretical one predicted by the Weyl's law shows that within the experimental resolution the resonances are doubly degenerate.

Quantum pseudointegrable Hamiltonian impact system.

Phys Rev E

May 2023

Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot 7610001, Israel.

Quantization of a toy model of a pseudointegrable Hamiltonian impact system is introduced, including Einstein-Brillouin-Keller quantization conditions, a verification of Weyl's law, the study of their wave functions, and a study of their energy levels properties. It is demonstrated that the energy level statistics are similar to those of pseudointegrable billiards. Yet, here, the density of wave functions which concentrate on projections of classical level sets to the configuration space does not disappear at large energies, suggesting that there is no equidistribution in the configuration space in the large energy limit; this is shown analytically for some limit symmetric cases and is demonstrated numerically for some nonsymmetric cases.

Acoustic response of a thin-walled spherical flight tank filled with water is explored theoretically and experimentally as a testbed for an application of Weyl's law to the problem of mass-gauging propellants in zero-gravity in space. Weyl's law relates the mode counting function of a resonator to its volume and can be used to infer the volume of liquid in a tank from the tank's acoustic response. One of the challenges of applying Weyl's law to real tanks is to account for the boundary conditions which are neither Neumann nor Dirichlet.

Hearing Euler characteristic of graphs.

Phys Rev E

Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Aleja Lotników 32/46, 02-668 Warsaw, Poland.

The Euler characteristic χ=|V|-|E| and the total length L are the most important topological and geometrical characteristics of a metric graph. Here |V| and |E| denote the number of vertices and edges of a graph. The Euler characteristic determines the number β of independent cycles in a graph while the total length determines the asymptotic behavior of the energy eigenvalues via Weyl's law.
