The promotional effect of potassium (~1.25 wt%) on a Co/MnO catalyst was studied for samples prepared by the impregnation method in the steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) process at 420 °C for a HO/EtOH molar ratio of 12/1. The catalysts were characterized using physicochemical methods to study their textural, structural, and redox properties. The XRD studies revealed that, during the treatment of both cobalt-based catalysts under a hydrogen atmosphere at 500 °C, Co and MnO phases were formed by the reduction in CoO and MnO/MnO phases, respectively. Potassium doping significantly improved stability and ability for the C-C bond cleavage of the Co/MnO catalyst. The enhancement of activity (at ~25%) and selectivity to hydrogen (at ca. 10%) and the C1 product, mainly carbon dioxide (at ~20%), of the Co/MnO catalyst upon potassium doping was clarified by the alkali promoter's impact on the reducibility of the cobalt and manganese oxides. The microscopic observations revealed that fibrous carbon deposits are present on the surface of Co/MnOx and KCo/MnOx catalysts after the SRE reaction and their formation is the main reason these catalysts deactivate under SRE conditions. However, carbon accumulation on the surface of the potassium-promoted catalyst was ca. 12% lower after 18 h of SRE reaction compared to the unpromoted sample.

The conductive carbon-based interlayer, as the secondary current collector in the self-dissolving battery system, can effectively capture escaping cathode active materials, inducing deep release of remaining capacity. In the multi-step reactions of Li─S batteries, the environmental tolerance of the conductive carbon-based interlayer to polysulfides determines the inhibition of shuttle effects. Here, a modified metal-organic framework (Mn-ZIF67) is utilized to obtain nitrogen-doped carbon-coated heterogeneous Co-MnO (Co-MnO@NC) with dual catalytic center for the functional interlayer materials.

Wastewater treatment recycling is critical to ensure safe water supply or to overcome water shortage. Herein, we developed metallic Co integration onto MnO nanorods (MON) resulting in a phase-separated synergetic catalyst by creating more Mn(III) the Jahn-Teller effect and oxygen vacancies and improving the redox capability of Co nanoparticles mediated by a thin carbon layer. Additionally, the N-doped surface carbon network on MON contributes to polar sites, facilitating the enrichment of contaminants around reactive sites, thereby shortening the migration of reactive oxidative species (ROS) toward contaminants.

The pursuit of efficient and economically viable catalysts for liquid/solid-state zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is of paramount importance yet presents formidable challenge. Herein, we synthesized a vacancy-rich cobalt/manganese oxide catalyst (Co/MnO@NC) stabilized on a nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NC) nanosphere matrix by leveraging hydrothermal and high-temperature pyrolysis strategy. The optimized Co/MnO@NC demonstrates fast reaction kinetics and large limiting current densities comparable to commercial Pt/C in alkaline electrolyte for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).
