Here, we report a new version of the extended Rate Constants Distribution (RCD) model for metal ion sorption, which includes complex-formation equilibria. With the RCD-complex model, one can predict sorbent performance in the presence of complexing agents using data on metal ion sorption from ligand-free solutions and a set of coefficients for sorption rate constants of different ionic species. The RCD-complex model was applied to breakthrough curves of Cu(II) sorption from acetate and tartrate solutions on polyethyleneimine (PEI) monolith cryogel at different flow rates and ionic speciation. We have shown that, despite the lower stability of Cu(II)-acetate complex, at high flow rates, acetate has a more pronounced negative effect on sorption kinetics than tartrate. The RCD model was successfully used to predict the shape of the breakthrough curves at an arbitrary acetate concentration but failed to predict Cu(II) sorption from tartrate solutions in a broad range of ligand concentrations. Since a twofold increase in sorption capacity was observed at low tartrate concentrations, the latter fact was related to an alteration in the sorption mechanism of Cu(II)-ions, which depended on Cu(II) ionic speciation. The obtained results emphasize the importance of information about sorption kinetics of different ionic forms for the optimization of sorption filter performance in the presence of complexing agents.

This study investigated the effects of resin composites (RCs) containing surface pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) filler on the dentin microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of HEMA-free and HEMA-containing universal adhesives (UAs). Water sorption (WS) and solubility (SL), degree of conversion (DC), and ion release were measured. The UAs BeautiBond Xtreme (BBX; 0% HEMA), Modified Adhesive-1 (E-BBX1; 5% HEMA), Modified Adhesive-2 (E-BBX2; 10% HEMA), and two 2-step self-etch adhesives (2-SEAs): FL-BOND II (FBII; with S-PRG filler) and silica-containing adhesive (E-FBII) were used.

This study investigates the use of Brewers' Spent Grains (BSGs) as a sustainable biocomposite building materials, using cornstarch as a biopolymer binder. BSG aggregates are compared with hemp shives, a conventional aggregate known for its thermal properties. Starch is employed as a natural binder in three different formulations to further reduce the carbon footprint of the building material.

Herein, we report a study that provides new insight on the knowledge gaps that relate to the role of biopolymer structure and adsorption properties for chitosan adsorbents that are cross-linked with glutaraldehyde. The systematic modification of chitosan cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (CG) and its quaternized forms (QCG) was studied in relation to the reaction conditions: mole ratios of reactants and pH conditions. Complementary adsorbent characterization employed C NMR/FTIR spectroscopy, TGA and DSC, point-zero-charge (PZC), solvent swelling, and sorption studies using selected dye probes.

This work presents a novel hydrothermally aided sol-gel method for preparation of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with a narrow particle size distribution and varied pore sizes. The method was carried out in alkaline media in presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as dual templates and permitted the synthesis of spherical mesoporous silica with a high surface area (1011.42 m/g).

Taking into account the trends in the field of green chemistry and the desire to use natural materials in biomedical applications, (bio)polyelectrolyte complexes ((bio)PECs) based on a mixture of chitosan and gelatin seem to be relevant systems. Using the approach of self-assembly from the dispersion of the coacervate phase of a (bio)PEC at different ratios of ionized functional groups of chitosan and gelatin (), hydrogels with increased resistance to mechanical deformations and resorption in liquid media were obtained in this work in comparison to a hydrogel from gelatin. It was found that at ≥ 1 a four-fold increase in the elastic modulus of the hydrogel occurred in comparison to a hydrogel based on gelatin.
