Overt and hidden polymorphism in the binary system involving the Z- and E- isomers of broparestrol.

Int J Pharm

December 2024

Laboratoire SMS, UR 3233, Université de Rouen Normandie, Normandie Université, F76000, Rouen, France. Electronic address:

Broparestrol has been used as a drug to treat acne in the form of a mixture of its two stereoisomers. Although it has been withdrawn from the market, the binary system is rich in polymorphism and understanding the phase behaviour of the binary system involving the E- and Z-isomers is challenging. Physical mixtures do not immediately give rise to equilibrium phase behaviour, whereas recrystallization often leads to metastable phases and the appearance of stable phases can take years.

Objective: We report the 6-month outcomes of the Ark Cannulation Trial (ACT) I early feasibility study. This investigation examined the Ark as a potential innovative access tool for overcoming cannulation-related challenges and improving arteriovenous fistula (AVF) dependent hemodialysis through targeted cannulation.

Methods: During this first-in-human, interventional, prospective, single arm, single site investigation, 13 patients were treated.

Transferrin-modified carboxymethyl chitosan-chitosan nanoparticles as an efficient delivery carrier for targeted therapy of depression.

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Key Laboratory of Chemistry and Engineering of Forest Products, State Ethnic Affairs Commission, Guangxi Key Laboratory of Chemistry and Engineering of Forest Products, Guangxi Collaborative Innovation Center for Chemistry and Engineering of Forest Products, Guangxi Minzu University, Nanning 530006, China. Electronic address:

Limitations of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) are responsible for the low efficacy and high toxicity of many antidepressants. However, strategies to enhance BBB targeting to improve the efficacy and safety of antidepressants remain challenging. In this study, we prepared transferrin (Tf)-functionalized chitosan (CS)-N,O-carboxymethy chitosan (NOCMS) nanosystems (NPs) (NOCMS-CS-Tf NPs), which can enhance BBB targeting in the depressive environment and allow more NPs to enter the brain.

Objective: Epilepsy surgery in the operculoinsular cortex is challenging due to the difficult delineation of the epileptogenic zone and the high risk of postoperative deficits.

Methods: Pre- and postsurgical data from 30 pediatric patients who underwent operculoinsular cortex surgery at the Motol Epilepsy Center Prague from 2010 to 2022 were analyzed.

Results: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD; n = 15, 50%) was the predominant cause of epilepsy, followed by epilepsy-associated tumors (n = 5, 17%) and tuberous sclerosis complex (n = 2, 7%).

Magnetic compression anastomosis (MCA) for esophageal stenosis requires the insertion of magnets through two channels, transoral and transgastrostomy. Herein, we designed a Y-Z deformable self-assembled magnetic anastomosis ring (Y-Z DSAMAR) for esophageal stricture anastomosis through the transoral passage only. We introduce a Y-Z DSAMAR and verify its feasibility for single-access esophageal stenosis anastomosis in isolated organs.
