This study explored the role of the Na/K-ATPase (NKA) in membrane permeabilization induced by nanosecond electric pulses. Using CRISPR/Cas9 and shRNA, we silenced the ATP1A1 gene, which encodes α1 NKA subunit in U937 human monocytes. Silencing reduced the rate and the cumulative uptake of YoPro-1 dye after electroporation by 300-ns, 7-10 kV/cm pulses, while ouabain, a specific NKA inhibitor, enhanced YoPro-1 entry. We conclude that the α1 subunit supports the electropermeabilized membrane state, by forming or stabilizing electropores or by hindering repair mechanisms, and this role is independent of NKA's ion pump function.

In this work, atmospheric pulsed laser deposition was used to prepare photosensitive elements. This technology is a practical and relatively inexpensive way of obtaining highly porous nanostructures composed of nanoparticles or nanoaggregates characterized by a large surface-to-volume ratio. Samples were produced via laser nanosecond or picosecond laser ablation of pure ZnO or mixed ZnO-TiO targets on quartz substrates with pre-deposited gold electrodes.

Solution-processed gain media have great technological potential as lasers due to their ease of integration with on-chip photonics, scalability and tuneable optoelectronic properties. Currently, the spectral coverage of solution-processed lasers extends from visible up to telecom wavelengths in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) (<1650 nm). Here, the optical gain in the extended SWIR from 1600 nm to 2500 nm is demonstrated, using PbSbased colloidal quantum dots (CQDs).

Thin films based on tungsten oxide (WO) were grown by nanosecond pulsed laser deposition on alumina printed-circuit boards to fabricate electrochemical sensors for nitrogen dioxide (NO) detection.
