In this report, high-frequency electric impedance spectroscopy was performed to investigate ionic transport through nanochannels. Special attention was focused on (i) conductance behaviors depending on the role of cation valence in three background electrolytes (XCln): monovalent 1-1 (K and Cl), divalent 2-1 (Mg and 2Cl), and trivalent 3-1 (La and 3Cl), (ii) the effects of proton and bicarbonate ions on bulk and surface conductance, and (iii) the connected microchannel dimension (surface/height ratio aspect) within the nanochannel apparent conductance. The results highlight a net quantitative increase in surface silanol density and a strong decrease in surface ionization degree when lanthanum cations are employed. The results also demonstrate that La strongly interacts with the silica surface, leading to negative values of standard free energy for ion-site interactions and chemical potential for ion-ion correlations in the Stern layer of -0.8 and -10.2 kT, respectively. We ascribed the evolution of surface charge density to the balance between the mole ratios of water molecules and adsorbed cations at equilibrium. We found that La behaves as an acidic cation (Lewis conceptualization) that neutralizes the negative silica surface accompanying water molecule expulsion due to steric hindrance. This study constitutes a new contribution to ion-site interactions and to ion-ion correlation phenomena on the planar silica surface to explain charge inversion observation in micro-nanofluidic devices.

Antireflection (AR) coatings with mechanical robustness and superhydrophobic properties have wide potential applications in optical, electronic, and automotive fields. However, the fabrication of large-sized, robust, and multifunctional AR coatings on plastic/polymer substrates has been a challenging problem. In this study, we developed a bottom-up approach to produce mechanically robust, enhanced transmittance, and superhydrophobic coatings on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrate.

Background: Although surface finishing processes are effective against Streptococcus mutans biofilm, the mechanism of action of saliva with different acidity values has not been studied in detail. This study aims to produce four different all-ceramic materials in a single session with CAD/CAM devices and apply two different surface finishing processes, glazing and polishing, and then determine the retention of Streptococcus mutants on the surfaces of the materials in saliva with varying levels of acidity.
Methods: Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (Vita Suprinity, Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Saöckingen, Germany), monochromatic feldspar (Vitablocs Mark 2, Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Saöckingen, Germany), leucite glass ceramic (IPS Empress CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein), and monolithic zirconia (Incoris TZI (Cerec) Sirona, Germany) were used in the study.

This work aimed to extract silica from combination of rice husk (RH and Rice straw (RS) by optimizing the ash digesting process parameters with the aid of response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of three independent ash digestion process factors like sodium hydroxide concentration (1-3 M), temperature (60-120 °C) and time (1-3 h), for silica production from the mixture of rice husk (RH) and rice straw (RS) were studied. A quadratic model was used to correlate the interaction effects of the independent variables for maximum silica production at the optimum process parameters by employing central composite design (CCD) with RSM.

Nanoscale Fourier transform infrared (Nano-FTIR) imaging and spectroscopy correlated with photoluminescence measurements of lunar Apollo samples with different surface radiation exposure histories reveal distinct physical and chemical differences associated with space weathering effects. Analysis of two sample fragments: an ilmenite basalt (12016) and an impact melt breccia (15445) show evidence of intrinsic or delivered Nd and an amorphous silica glass component on exterior surfaces, whereas intrinsic Cr and/or trapped electron states are limited to interior surfaces. Spatially localized 1050 cm/935 cm band ratios in Nano-FTIR hyperspectral maps may further reflect impact-induced shock nanostructures, while shifts in silicate band positions indicate accumulated radiation damage at the nanoscale from prolonged space weathering due to micrometeorites, solar wind, energetic x-rays and cosmic ray bombardment.

Using CO as the C1 source for N-formylation of amine is a crucial energy-storage pathway to address the greenhouse effect while generating high-value-added chemicals but is limited by the activation of inert molecules. Herein, a dual active site catalyst with high CO activation and dihydrogen dissociation capacity was fabricated by incorporating a Schiff base and Au nanoparticles (NPs) on silicon dioxide (SiO). The modification of the Schiff base not only provides an alkaline environment for CO absorption but also stabilizes Au NPs in a small and highly dispersed state, which regulates the electronic density of the metal for excellent H cleavage.
