To further elucidate the mechanisms by which compensatory renal growth (CRG) can be influenced by calcium and calcium regulating hormones, the influence of dietary calcium and phosphorus, parathyroid hormone (PTH) or 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25-(OH)2D3) was evaluated in unilaterally nephrectomized (UNI-NX) rats. These animals were sacrificed three days after UNI-NX and CRG of the remaining kidney was assessed by kidney wt, RNA and DNA gains, and by 3H-thymidine incorporation. The degree of CRG was enhanced in animals given a low dietary calcium and, conversely, was decreased in those receiving a phosphorus-poor diet. In thyroparathyroidectomized (TPTX) rats, PTH administration resulted in a dose proportional stimulation of CRG. When 1,25-(OH)2D3 was given to vitamin D deficient animals, the degree of CRG was enhanced in a dose proportional manner. In another experiment, TPTX-vitamin D deficient rats were given the same amount of 1,25-(OH)2D3 by miniosmotic pump infusion. In these animals, dietary calcium restriction, instead of stimulating, inhibited CRG. From these observations we conclude that calcium and calcium regulating hormones modulate CRG, and hypothesize that the effects observed are mediated through changes in cell calcium.

Activation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) elicits negative effects on the reproductive system in mammals. Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid (FA) supplementation lowers ECS activation and has anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, we hypothesized that supplementing cows with n-3 FA will downregulate components of the ECS and immune system in preovulatory follicles and in the endometrium.

Increased industrial offshore activities in northern waters raise the question of impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on key Arctic marine species. One of these is the ecologically important polar cod (Boreogadus saida), which is the primary food source for Arctic marine mammals and seabirds. In the present work, we have conducted the first comprehensive proteomics study with this species by exploring the effects of dietary PAH exposure on the hepatic proteome, using benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) as a PAH model-compound.

The presence of the long-lived radionuclides Cs and Sr in ecosystems is a major environmental concern because bioavailable forms of the radionuclides are readily transferred to living organisms. The present study investigated how holometabolous insect development influences the fate of radiocaesium and radiostrontium by examining the behaviour of tracers (Cs and Sr) and stable elements during the larval feeding stage (21-23 days old), the pupal stage, and the adult stage. We aimed to evaluate the degree to which an herbivore or a detritivore food chain could serve as transfer pathways to higher trophic levels in terms of accumulation potential, and during which stage of development the accumulation potential is highest.

The availability of calcium (Ca) in poultry diets is influenced by various factors, such as the feed ingredients used.
