Application of Ultraviolet-Induced Fluorescence Trichoscopy (UVFT) in Hair and Scalp Diseases.

Dermatol Ther (Heidelb)

January 2025

Department of Dermatology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Medical College of Rzeszow University, Rzeszow, Poland.

Introduction: Ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy (UVFD) is increasingly utilized in dermatooncology and general dermatology. The objective of the study was to characterize the ultraviolet-induced fluorescence trichoscopy (UVFT) findings in a wide range of hair and scalp conditions.

Methods: Consecutive patients with non-scarring alopecias (alopecia areata, AA, n = 40; androgenetic alopecia, AGA, n = 40), scarring alopecias (frontal fibrosing alopecia, FFA, n = 20; lichen planopilaris, LPP, n = 20; folliculitis decalvans, FD, n = 14; discoid lupus erythematosus, DLE, n = 23), and inflammatory scalp conditions (psoriasis, n = 30; seborrheic dermatitis, n = 14) were included.

Carotenoid astaxanthin (Ax), a pink-red pigment, with its anti-oxidative feature, is useful as a therapeutic element for numerous diseases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the binding affinity of Ax to double strand (ds) DNA evaluated by using the fluorescence spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and docking approaches. The fluorescence results show that Ax can quench the intensity of DNA fluorescence via a static quenching way.

Department of Chemistry, Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, 11155-9516, Iran; Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, 11155-9516, Iran. Electronic address:

Chiral recognition has long been a challenging issue to deal with in biological systems, drug design and food authentication. Implementing nanoparticle-based probes with intrinsic or induced chirality in this field has addressed several issues concerning sensitivity, reliability, rapidness and the cost of chiral sensing platforms. Yet, research into chiral nanoprobes that can be used for visual monitoring of chiral substances is still in its infancy.
