Common pancreatobiliary epithelial malignancies such as pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder carcinoma have poor prognosis. A small but significant portion of these malignancies arise from mass-forming grossly and radiologically visible premalignant epithelial neoplasms in the pancreatobiliary tree. Several lesions, including a few recently described entities, fall under this category and predominantly include papillary epithelial lesions with or without mucin production.

The standard treatment for ductal carcinoma in situ became well established through the results of several valuable clinical trials, and its therapeutic benefits have now come to be taken for granted. Ductal carcinoma in situ has an extremely good prognosis with the current treatment approach, with a 10-year breast cancer-specific survival rate of 97-98%. According to one retrospective cohort study, the breast cancer-specific survival rate of patients with low-grade ductal carcinoma in situ does not differ significantly between patients undergoing and not undergoing surgery.

With the advancement of molecular testing and the routine use of immunohistochemical stains, salivary gland tumours previously categorized as adenoma or adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified, are being reclassified with distinct diagnoses. Newly recognized benign entities include: sclerosing polycystic adenoma, keratocystoma, intercalated duct hyperplasia and adenoma, and striated duct adenoma. Newly recognized malignant salivary gland tumours include: microsecretory adenocarcinoma, sclerosing microcytic adenocarcinoma, and mucinous adenocarcinoma.
