Acoustophoresis is an effective technique for particle manipulation. Acoustic radiation force scales with particle volume, enabling size separation. Yet, isolating sub-micron particles remains a challenge due to the acoustic streaming effect (ASE). While some studies confirmed the focusing ability of ASE, others reported continuous stirring effects. To investigate the parameters that influence ASE-induced particle motion in a microchannel, this study examined the effect of microchannel height and particle size. We employed standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW) to manipulate polystyrene particles suspended in the water-filled microchannel. The results show that ASE can direct particles as small as 0.31 µm in diameter to the centre of the streaming vortices, and increasing the channel height enhances the focusing effect. Smaller particles circulate in the streaming vortices continuously, with no movement towards the centres. We also discovered that when the channel height is at least 0.75 the fluid wavelength, particles transitioning from acoustic radiation-dominated to ASE-dominated share the same equilibrium position, which differs from the pressure nodes and the vortices' centres. The spatial distance between particles in different categories can lead to particle separation. Therefore, ASE is a potential alternative mechanism for sub-micron particle sorting when the channel height is accurately adjusted.

The present article deals with the modulation of oscillatory electroosmotic flow (EOF) and solute dispersion across a nanochannel filled with an electrolyte solution surrounded by a layer of a dielectric liquid. The dielectric permittivity of the liquid layer adjacent to supporting rigid walls is taken to be lower than that of the electrolyte solution. Besides, the aforesaid liquid layer may bear additional mobile charges, , free lipid molecules, charged surfactant molecules , which in turn lead to a nonzero charge along the liquid-liquid interface.

Construction and experimental validation of electrochemical cells with multiple electrodes in a microfluidic channel is described. Details of the fabrication of the electrodes and polydimethylsiloxane channel using soft lithography methods are given. Calibration of the collection efficiencies and transit times between electrodes validate the use of these cells for fast electrochemical detection of soluble species.

The failure mode of thin-walled C-channel beams typically manifests as premature local buckling of the compression flange, leading to insufficient utilization of material strength in both the flange and the web. To address this issue, this study adopts the approach of increasing the number of bends to reinforce the flange and adding V-shaped stiffeners in the middle of the web to reduce the width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements, thereby delaying local buckling and allowing for greater plastic deformation. However, the challenge lies in the irregular cross-sectional shape and complex buckling patterns.

This study investigates the gross morphological and morphometric characteristics of thoracic and lumbar intervertebral discs (IVDs) in guinea pigs, utilising micro-CT imaging and anatomical dissection. The findings reveal 13 thoracic and six lumbar IVDs were identified, with thoracic discs transitioning from rounded forms at T1-T3 to triangular and heart-shaped structures at T4-T13, while lumbar IVDs exhibited a consistently flattened heart shape. Morphometric analysis revealed statistically significant differences, with lumbar IVDs being larger in lateral and dorsoventral width, disc area, annulus fibrosus (AF) area and nucleus pulposus (NP) area, and ventral height compared to thoracic discs.
