Background: There are disputes whether inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) increase the incidence of fracture or osteoporosis among patients with COPD. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the effect of ICS treatment on the risk of fracture and osteoporosis in subjects with COPD.
Methods: This study included parallel-group randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing ICS and control (non-ICS) therapy for subjects with COPD that reported adverse events including fractures or osteoporosis. Studies were found using MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases between 1998-September 2022. Pooled risk ratios (RRs) and 95% CIs were calculated for primary outcomes.
Results: A total of 61,380 participants from 26 RCTs were included in the meta-analysis. Exposure to ICS did not increase the risk of fracture (RR 1.10 [95% CI 0.98-1.23], = .10) or osteoporosis risk (RR 0.93 [95% CI 0.49-1.79], = .84) in subjects with COPD.
Conclusions: ICS use did not increase the incidence of fracture or osteoporosis in subjects with COPD.

Magnesium (Mg)-based implants have evolved as a promising innovation in orthopedic trauma surgery, with the potential to revolutionize the treatment of bone diseases, including osteoporotic fractures and bone defects. Available clinical studies mostly show excellent patient outcomes of resorbable Mg-based implants, without the need for subsequent implant removal. However, the occurrence of radiolucent zones around Mg-based implants seems to be a noticeable drawback for a more widespread clinical use.

Methods: The clinical data of 12 patients with fusion device displacement after OLIF for lumbar lesions in 4 medical centers from October 2014 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed, including 4 males and 8 females, aged from 53 to 81 years old;2 patients with lumbar disc degeneration, 4 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, 3 patients with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis and 3 patients with lumbar degenerative kyphosis;preoperative dual-energy X-ray bone mineral density (BMD) was detected in 1 patient with T-value > -1 SD, 5 patients with T-value >-1~-2.5 SD, and 6 patients with T-value <-2.

Atraumatic bilateral femoral neck fractures are rare, especially in younger patients and those without significant comorbidities. However, pregnant individuals appear to be at increased risk due to normal physiological changes in calcium balance, leading to transient osteoporosis of the hip. In these individuals, calcium and bone mineral density are generally decreased, reflecting the calcium demands of the developing fetus.
