Although the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) primarily involves the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neurological manifestations, including movement disorders such as myoclonus and cerebellar ataxia, have also been reported. However, the occurrence of post-SARS-CoV-2 chorea is rare. Herein, we describe a 91-year-old female with a past medical history of hypothyroidism who developed chorea after two weeks of contracting a mild coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The sudden onset of severe behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms in children is a frightening and potentially life-changing situation. The pediatric health care providers and clinicians to whom families turn need guidance on how to accurately diagnose and treat new-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms in children. They need expert guidance about whether these symptoms indicate a diagnosis compatible with pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS).

Purpose Of Review: This review seeks to examine the prevalence, pathophysiology, diagnostic challenges, and treatment strategies for movement disorders in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Recent Findings: In recent years, the spectrum and number of autoimmune movement disorders has rapidly expanded with the identification of neuronal and paraneoplastic antibodies which should be considered in the differential for patients with acute to subacute development of a movement disorder. The identification of SLE in a patient with a new onset movement disorder may lead to earlier treatment with immune therapies especially if other systemic manifestations are present.

New onset movement disorders are a common clinical problem in pediatric neurology and can be infectious, inflammatory, metabolic, or functional in origin. Encephalitis is one of the more important causes of new onset movement disorders, and movement disorders are a common feature (~25%) of all encephalitis. However, all encephalitides are not the same, and movement disorders are a key diagnostic feature that can help the clinician identify the etiology of the encephalitis, and therefore appropriate treatment is required.

Chorea can be an initial manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). It has been mostly described in younger female adults in association with other manifestations of SLE. When chorea appears as an initial and only manifestation in SLE/APS patients, the establishment of the correct diagnosis is difficult, and it may be initially attributed to a more common aetiology.
