Road traffic induced tire wear particles (TWP) attracted widespread attention due to their potential environmental impact. Here, the adsorption process of heavy metals like Pb and Cd on tire wear particles produced by filing (TWP-f) is studied to elucidate the underlying kinetics and thermodynamics. This work includes voltammetric experiments to investigate the concentration and temperature dependency of the adsorption. The adsorption kinetics in buffer solution spiked with heavy metals follows a pseudo-second-order rate equation involving rate-controlling boundary layer adsorption and a side-by-side intraparticle diffusion process. Meanwhile, the adsorption tendencies under the studied conditions for TWP-f were Pb > Cd. The equilibrium adsorption data were modulated by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (DR) isotherms. Both the Freundlich and DR isotherms were found to be feasible for describing the adsorption on TWP-f. The adsorption energy obtained from the DR isotherm is 1.6 kJ mol for Pb and 2 kJ mol for Cd, indicating physisorption as the dominating force. According to the Freundlich isotherm, multilayer adsorption is proposed. The thermodynamic parameters show that the adsorption of Pb and Cd is endergonic. Due to small Gibbs enthalpy values near the thermodynamic equilibrium, the adsorption process is mainly dependent on the ambient conditions. So, close-to-nature experiments were conducted to verify the received results. Therefore, tire and road wear particles including road sediments (TRWP+RS) were added to prefiltered freshwater samples of the river Freiberger Mulde (having naturally elevated trace element concentrations). The adsorption kinetics were investigated by ICP-MS/MS emphasizing the pseudo-second-order rate equation. Moreover, it is suggested that the tire wear particles in the TRWP+RS sample are majorly responsible for the adsorption of at least Cd.

In the present in vitro study, we evaluated the adhesion of an injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) to laser-textured zirconia surfaces and their resultant friction behavior against bone tissue. Three types of zirconia surfaces were compared regarding the i-PRF coating effects: 1) grit blasted with 250-μm spherical alumina particles and acid etched with 20% hydrofluoric acid (ZLA), 2) laser textured with a random (RD) surface pattern, or 3) laser textured with a designed pattern based on 16 lines and 8 passages (L16N8). The coefficient of friction (COF) of the specimens was assessed on a reciprocating sliding pin-on-plate tribometer at 1-N normal load, 1 Hz, and a 2-mm stroke length.

Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging environmental concern, but studies on these contaminants, particularly in river ecosystems, remain scarce. Research has indicated that MPs in the environment are predominantly microfibers (MFs); however, a few studies suggest that the MFs encountered are chiefly of natural origin. In this study, we aimed to improve the understanding of MP/MFs (both plastic and natural), among microparticle (solid particles >10 μm to <5000 μm; mainly of plastic as well as natural origin) loads in the Tiber River, Italy, by analyzing the physicochemical properties of surface water and assessing the abundance and characteristics of MPs-MFs at three sites: Ponte Grillo, Aniene, and Magliana, along a 60 km stretch.

This study employed a high-speed rotating crushing process to modify pyrolyzed carbon black (CBp) using self-lubricating and low-friction polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The effects of PTFE content on the dispersion, mechanical properties, wear resistance, and thermal stability of modified PTFE-CBp/natural rubber (NR) composites were investigated. The rotating crushing process from the high-speed grinder altered the physical structure of PTFE, forming tiny fibrous structures that interspersed among the CBp particles.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of TiC addition on the microstructure, microhardness, and wear resistance of the medium-entropy alloy Co37Cr28Ni31Al2Ti2, which is suitable for applications in aerospace, automotive, and energy industries due to its high strength and wear resistance. The samples containing 0, 10, 20, and 40 wt.% of TiC were synthesized.

In this study, we investigated the effect of spray angle on the microstructure, bonding quality, and scratch resistance of cold-sprayed SS316L coatings on SS304 substrates. The coatings were deposited at spray angles of 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90° using a high-pressure cold spray system. A comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the spray angle and coating properties was conducted, with a particular focus on fracture toughness and porosity.
