The coherence hypothesis assumes that sense of coherence (SOC) explains the positive link between religion/spirituality (R/S) and mental health. The aim of our meta-analysis is to evaluate the evidence for the association between SOC (sensu Antonovsky) and different aspects of R/S and thus to contribute to the verification of the coherence hypothesis. Eighty-nine English- and German-language primarily cross-sectional studies with 67,913 participants met the inclusion criteria. The R/S scales of all included studies were subjected to item-by-item qualitative content analysis in order to determine whether scales do actually measure religion or spirituality and which R/S aspects dominated the instrument. Based on this classification, overall and subgroup meta-analyses were conducted using a random effects model. The adjusted effect size between SOC and all positive R/S measures was r+ = .120, 95% CI [.092, .149]. Particularly significant (r+ < -.180 or > .180) were correlations with negative R/S scales (r+ = -.405, 95% CI [-.476, -.333]), R/S instruments measuring primarily positive emotions (r+ = .212, 95% CI [.170, .253]) or meaning-making (r+ = .196, 95% CI [.126, .265]). Both sample characteristics (age, culture, gender, health status, religious affiliation) and study characteristics (e.g., publication year) had a moderating effect on the R/S-SOC connection. The correlation was particularly high in studies from Southern Asia (r+ = .226, 95% CI [.156, .297]), the African Islamic cultural value zone (r+ = .196, 95% CI [.106, .285]), and in a small subgroup of Iranian studies (r+ = .194, 95% CI [.117, .271]). The results confirm that R/S and SOC are clearly associated and suggest that there are different religious/spiritual pathways to a strong SOC. The strength of the associations presumably depends not only on individual differences, but also on cultural embeddedness and social plausibility of R/S. Trial registration. The second messenger guanosine 3',5'-bis(diphosphate)/guanosine tetraphosphate (ppGpp) and guanosine 3'-diphosphate 5'-triphosphate/guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) ((p)ppGpp) has been shown to be crucial for the survival of mycobacteria under hostile conditions. Unexpectedly, deletion of primary (p)ppGpp synthetase-Rel did not completely diminish (p)ppGpp levels leading to the discovery of novel bifunctional enzyme-RelZ, which displayed guanosine 5'-monophosphate,3'-diphosphate (pGpp), ppGpp, and pppGpp ((pp)pGpp) synthesis and RNAseHII activity. What conditions does it express itself under, and does it work in concert with Rel? The regulation of its transcription and whether the Rel enzyme plays a role in such regulation remain unclear.

Background: Decreased diet intake and malnourishment have profound implications on cancer patients' quality of life and survival. Malnutrition increases the risk of postoperative complications, increases hospital length stays, reduces patient's tolerance to radiation and chemotherapy treatment, and results in poor response to treatment. In the present study, we intended to assess the nutritional status of cancer patients and find the correlation of body mass index with anthropometric and blood parameters.

The knowledge of the Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) family from the Mexican state of Oaxaca is updated based on specialized literature, databases, and specimens preserved in entomological collections. A total of 565 species (including subspecies) are recorded for the state. Leptostylus notaticollis Bates, 1880 is a new record for Mexico and 64 species, 28 genera, and four tribes are recorded for the first time for Oaxaca.

Article Synopsis
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is linked to high blood sugar due to reduced insulin activity, and a study from South India explored genetic factors, particularly the LEPR gene polymorphism rs1137101, in its development.* -
  • Researchers analyzed data from 311 participants and conducted a meta-analysis involving 254 previous studies, assessing the quality of these studies and finding a significant association between the rs1137101 polymorphism and increased T2DM risk.* -
  • The study employed various genetic models, indicating that specific genetic variations play a crucial role in the likelihood of developing T2DM, with findings supporting existing research in diverse populations.*

, an etiological agent of tuberculosis, requires a long treatment regimen due to its ability to respond to stress and persist inside the host. The second messenger (p)ppGpp-mediated stress response plays a critical role in such long-term survival, persistence, and antibiotic tolerance which may also lead to the emergence of multiple drug resistance. In mycobacteria, (pp)pGpp molecules are synthesized predominantly by two bifunctional enzymes-long RSH-Rel and short SAS-RelZ.
