We conducted a feasibility randomized controlled trial exploring the effect of aromatherapy massage on sleep in critically ill patients. Patients were randomized to receive aromatherapy massage or usual care, and feasibility of recruitment and outcome data completion was captured. Sleep (depth) was assessed through Bispectral Index monitoring and self/nurse-reported Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaires, and the Sleep in the ICU Questionnaire. Thirty-four patients participated: 17 were randomized to aromatherapy massage and 17 to control. Five participants who received the intervention completed outcomes for analysis (alongside eight controls). A larger study was deemed unfeasible in this population, highlighting the value of testing feasibility of complex interventions, such as massage for sleep in ICU.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common side effect of oxaliplatin in colorectal cancer patients that may impact both physical and mental well-being significantly. When Western medical care alone is unable to satisfy patient needs, integrative care combining traditional Chinese and Western medicine approaches is an alternative option. This article shares the integrative care experience of a post-operative rectal cancer patient who suffered from chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

The following review focuses on routine postoperative care after cesarean delivery (CD), including specific Enhanced Recovery After Cesarean (ERAS) recommendations as well as important postpartum counseling points. Following CD, there is insufficient evidence to support administration of prophylactic multi-dose antibiotics to all patients. Additional antibiotic doses are indicated for the following scenarios: patients with obesity, CD lasting ≥ 4 hours since prophylactic dose, blood loss >1,500 mL, or those with an intra-amniotic infection.
