In Africa, homosexuality is routinely understood as a form of immoral behaviour. This has great implications for the physical and psychological well-being of homosexuals in Africa. One of the reasons why homosexuals are sometimes understood to be behaving immorally is because it is believed that same-sex relations are unnatural. I think that this conception of unnatural is grounded on the perverted faculty argument, although this is not often expressed in such terms. In this article, I will develop a concept of natural grounded on the concept of Ukama. I will show that despite Ukama implying a functional conception of nature, just like in the perverted faculty argument, it does not imply that homosexuality is immoral.

Quantitative Oculomotor and Vestibular Profile in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6 - Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Cerebellum

December 2024

NeuroMetrology Lab, Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Clinical Neurology, Medical Sciences Division, University of Oxford, Oxford, OX3 9DU, UK.

Whereas several studies have reported on quantitative oculomotor and vestibular measurements in spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6), selecting the most suitable paradigms remains challenging. We aimed to address this knowledge gap through a systematic literature review and providing disease-specific recommendations for a tailored set of eye-movement recordings in SCA6. A literature search (MEDLINE, Embase) was performed focusing on studies reporting on quantitative oculomotor and/or vestibular measurements in SCA6-patients.

In the course of infecting their hosts, pathogenic bacteria secrete numerous effectors, namely, bacterial proteins that pervert host cell biology. Many Gram-negative bacteria, including context-dependent human pathogens, use a type IV secretion system (T4SS) to translocate effectors directly into the cytosol of host cells. Various type IV secreted effectors (T4SEs) have been experimentally validated to play crucial roles in virulence by manipulating host cell gene expression and other processes.

CD4 T helper cell responses to NY-ESO-1 tumor antigen in ovarian cancer resist perversion into immunosuppressive Tregs.

In a recent study, we have demonstrated that T helper type 1 (T1) cells specific for the tumor antigen NY-ESO-1 are amplified at ovarian tumor sites but are not "perverted" into immunosuppressive FOXP3 regulatory T cells (Tregs). These findings encourage the development of protocols aiming to eliminate, or inactivate, FOXP3 Tregs and reinforce Type I anticancer immunity, to improve clinical outcomes.

In this article, the production of knowledge in the context of socially excluded people exposed to inequality, oppression, and exploitation is problematized. The analysis follows Enrique Dussel's philosophical exegesis of the politics of power and corruption and his vision of a critical transformation of the social political order. The argument is also informed by the work of critical educator Paulo Freire, who elucidates the conditions of oppression and marginalization and highlights the importance of conscientization to develop a critical awareness of these conditions.
