The presence of edema in patients with lipedema has been investigated in many studies. However, no study has been found that examines the amount of intracellular (ICF) and extracellular fluid (ECF) in these patients together. The aim of this study is to examine the amount of ICF and ECF in patients with stage 2 lipedema. Twenty-four patients diagnosed with stage 2 lipedema were included in the study. Bioimpedance spectroscopy was applied to measure extracellular and intracellular water levels. The mean age of the participants was 44.58 ± 2.95 years. The mean body mass index (BMI) of the participants was 33.9 ± 1.84 kg/m. It was observed that the amount of ECF in the patients was above the normal values ( < 0.001), whereas the amount of ICF was within the normal range ( = 0.801). In addition, it was observed that there was a moderate relationship between BMI and the amount of ECF. Although the amount of ICF is within the normal range in patients with lipedema, an increase in ECF is observed. The reason why edema is not observed in these patients despite the increase in ECF may be the increase in glycosaminoglycan and proteoglycan synthesis. In addition, the attention of these patients to weight control may contribute to slowing the course of the disease by preventing the increase in the amount of ECF. For a better diagnosis of lipedema, it is considered important to evaluate the amount of ECF in addition to routine evaluations.

Purpose: To evaluate correlation between terminal ileal (TI) stricture diagnosis at MR enterography (MRE) and ileocolonoscopy (IC) in patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

Methods: One hundred and four patients with CD (51% females; 41 ± 15 years) underwent IC and MRE within 3 months in this retrospective case-control study. Positive cases had TI strictures diagnosed by endoscopy (n = 35); or MRE (threshold small bowel dilation ≥ 3cm; n = 34).

Extracellular fluid volume, rather than body weight, should guide chronic heart failure management in home-care patients. Enhancing muscle mass through pharmacotherapy, nutrition, and exercise is essential to prevent heart failure exacerbation.

Use of parenteral nutrition in the management of enterocutaneous fistula.

Nutr Clin Pract

February 2025

Department of Surgery, Denver Health Medical Center, University of Colorado, Denver, Colorado, USA.

Nutrition plays an integral role in the management of patients with enterocutaneous fistula (ECF), but practice guidelines are often vague because of limited evidence. As a result, clinicians must rely on expert consensus and sound nutrition principles to guide practice. The initial phase of ECF management involves recognition (eg, fistula location and quantifying output) and stabilization (eg, source control and fluid and electrolyte balance).

Enterocutaneous fistulas (ECFs) occurring in the setting of Crohn's disease (CD) are difficult to cure with medical treatment alone and affects a patient's quality of life. A 39-year-old man was diagnosed with an ileocolitis-type CD in 2007. His inflammation was insufficiently controlled despite the administration of an anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha antibody.

Ocular Pharmacokinetics of Faricimab Following Intravitreal Administration in Patients With Retinal Disease.

Roche Pharma Research and Early Development, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Roche Innovation Center Basel, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., Basel, Switzerland.

Purpose: To characterize faricimab ocular and systemic pharmacokinetics (PK) in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) or diabetic macular edema (DME) and to assess the effect of faricimab ocular exposure on clinical endpoints.

Methods: A population PK (popPK) model was developed using pooled data from phase 1 to 3 studies in patients with nAMD/DME. The dataset included 1095 faricimab aqueous humor (AH) concentrations from 284 patients and 8372 faricimab plasma concentrations from 2246 patients.
