The development of energetically efficient processes for the aqueous reduction of biomass-derived compounds into chemicals is key for the optimal transformation of biomass. Herein we report an early example of the reduction of biomass-derived oxygenated compounds in water by magnetically induced catalysis. Non-coated and carbon-coated core-shell magnetic nanoparticles were used as the heating agent and the catalyst simultaneously. In this way it was possible to control the product distribution by adjusting the field amplitude applied during the magnetic catalysis, opening a precedent for this type of catalysis. Finally, the encapsulation of the magnetic nanoparticles in carbon () strongly improved the stability of the magnetic catalyst in solution, making its reuse possible up to at least eight times in dioxane and four times in water.

Biocatalytic Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived Furan Aldehydes to Alcohols.

J Agric Food Chem

January 2025

College of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Nanjing Tech University, Nanjing 211800, China.

The biomass-derived furan aldehydes furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) are versatile platform chemicals used to produce various value-added chemicals through further valorization processes. Selectively reducing C═O in FF and HMF molecules to form furfuryl alcohol (FAL) and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), represents an important research field in upgrading biomass-based furan compounds. Currently, the reduction of furan aldehydes to furan alcohols through chemical transformation often leads to unavoidable environmental issues and the formation of potential byproducts.

Boosting Amino Acid Synthesis with WO Sub-Nanoclusters.

Adv Mater

January 2025

College of Chemistry and Materials Science, Anhui Normal University, Wuhu, 241002, P. R. China.

The conversion of nitrate-rich wastewater and biomass-derived blocks into high-value products using renewably generated electricity is a promising approach to modulate the artificial carbon and nitrogen cycle. Here, a new synthetic strategy of WO sub-nanoclusters is reported and supported on carbon materials as novel efficient electrocatalysts for nitrate reduction and its coupling with α-keto acids. In acidic solutions, the NH-NHOH selectivity can also optimized by adjusting the potential, with the total FE exceeding 80% over a wide potential range.

Developing efficient and cost-effective rare earth element-based electrocatalysts for water splitting remains a significant challenge. To address this, interface engineering and charge modulation strategies were employed to create a three-dimensional coral-like CeF/MoO heterostructure electrocatalyst, grown in situ on the multistage porous channels of carbonized sugarcane fiber (CSF). Integrating abundant CeF/MoO heterostructure interfaces and numerous oxygen vacancy defects significantly enhanced the catalyst's active sites and molecular activation capabilities.
