Auricular vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a non-invasive treatment modality. Opinions that it can be used in the treatment of various clinical problems have gained importance in recent years. In this study, it was aimed to lay the groundwork for the use of the auricular VNS in different ears. Healthy individuals ( = 90) were divided into three groups: unilateral left ( = 30), unilateral right ( = 30), and bilateral ( = 30) auricular VNS. Electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) measurements were performed before and after auricular VNS (10 Hz, 300 µs, 20 min) for a single session. An increase in wrist extensor muscles activation was detected on the contralateral side of the auricular VNS application side. It has been observed that there is a general decrease in the power of high-frequency waves and an increase in the power of lower-medium frequency waves in various parts of the brain. Our findings suggest that the projection of the auricular VNS in the central nervous system may also affect the corticospinal tracts.

Role of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in alleviation of tinnitus in normal hearing subjects.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

January 2025

Audio-vestibular Medicine unit, department of Ear, Nose and throat, Faculty of Medicine, Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt.

Background: Subjective tinnitus is characterized by perception of sound in the absence of any external or internal acoustic stimuli. Many approaches have been developed over the years to treat tinnitus (medical and nonmedical). However, no consensus has been reached on the optimal therapeutic approach.

: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common condition with limited long-term treatment options. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has shown potential for pain improvement, but its use in CLBP remains underexplored. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy, feasibility and tolerability of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) in reducing pain and improving functional outcomes in CLBP patients.

Applying auricular magnetic therapy to decrease blood glucose levels and promote the healing of gangrene in diabetes patients: a case report.

J Med Case Rep

December 2024

Beijing Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology, 19 Edgemoor Road, Lutherville-Timonium, MD, 21093, USA.

Background: Magnetic therapy has demonstrated beneficial effects for reducing pain, nausea, neuropathy, and various other health concerns in the human body. To our knowledge, limited research has documented the use of auricular static magnetic therapy as a potential treatment for diabetes. This report presents the first evidence of using magnetic discs placed at acupuncture points on the human ear to decrease blood glucose levels and promote the healing of gangrene in diabetic patients.

Background: The main reason restricting stroke patients from reintegrating into society is neurological deficits. Of particular interest is the potential Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) potentially offers for sustaining improvement in neurological deficits. The goal of the present study is to provide a summary of the findings from research that has been carried out to elucidate the mechanisms and demonstrate the efficacy and safety of the clinical application of VNS, as well as to identify research gaps in the field, in order to offer references for subsequent further research and application.

Background: Current inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatments often fail to achieve lasting remission and have adverse effects. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) offers a promising therapy due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Its invasive nature, however, has led to the development of non-invasive methods like transcutaneous auricular VNS (taVNS).
