Small perturbations in the structure of materials significantly affect their properties. One example is single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which exhibit chirality-dependent near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence. They can be modified with quantum defects through the reaction with diazonium salts, and the number or distribution of these defects determines their photophysics. However, the presence of multiple chiralities in typical SWCNT samples complicates the identification of defect-related emission features. Here, we show that quantum defects do not affect aqueous two-phase extraction (ATPE) of different SWCNT chiralities into different phases, which suggests low numbers of defects. For bulk samples, the bandgap emission (E) of monochiral (6,5)-SWCNTs decreases, and the defect-related emission feature (E*) increases with diazonium salt concentration and represents a proxy for the defect number. The high purity of monochiral samples from ATPE allows us to image NIR fluorescence contributions (E = 986 nm and E* = 1140 nm) on the single SWCNT level. Interestingly, we observe a stochastic (Poisson) distribution of quantum defects. SWCNTs have most likely one to three defects (for low to high (bulk) quantum defect densities). Additionally, we verify this number by following single reaction events that appear as discrete steps in the temporal fluorescence traces. We thereby count single reactions via NIR imaging and demonstrate that stochasticity plays a crucial role in the optical properties of SWCNTs. These results show that there can be a large discrepancy between ensemble and single particle experiments/properties of nanomaterials.

Magnetoelectric (ME) devices combining piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials have emerged as powerful tools to miniaturize and enhance sensing and communication technologies. This paper examines recent developments in bulk acoustic wave (BAW) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) ME devices, which demonstrate unique capabilities in ultra-sensitive magnetic sensing, compact antennas, and quantum applications. Leveraging the mechanical resonance of BAW and SAW modes, ME sensors achieve the femto- to pico-Tesla sensitivity ideal for biomedical applications, while ME antennas, operating at acoustic resonance, allow significant size reduction, with high radiation gain and efficiency, which is suited for bandwidth-restricted applications.

It is necessary to overcome the relatively low conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) caused by steric hindrance effects to improve their ability to passivate defects and inhibit ion migration to boost the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we designed and prepared a kind of low-concentration 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF) diluted with propylene carbonate (PC) via an ultrasonic technique (PC/IL). The decrease in the decomposition temperature related to the IL part and the increase in the sublimation temperature related to the PC part facilitated the use of PC/IL to effectively delay the crystallization process and passivate the defects in multiple ways to obtain high-quality perovskite films.

Tin-based perovskite has emerged as an excellent luminescent material due to its non-toxicity and narrow bandgap compared to lead-based perovskite. However, its tin ions are easily oxidized by oxygen, which leads to increased vacancy defects and poor crystallinity, presenting a significant challenge in obtaining high-quality perovskite films. In this context, we introduced an approach by synergistically adding SnF and tin powder into the precursor solution to enhance the antioxidation of Sn ions.

The incorporation of polymeric insulators has led to notable achievements in the field of organic semiconductors. By altering the blending concentration, polymeric insulators exhibit extensive capabilities in regulating molecular configuration, film crystallinity, and mitigation of defect states. However, current research suggests that the improvement in such physical properties is primarily attributed to the enhancement of thin film morphology, an outcome that seems to be an inevitable consequence of incorporating insulators.

Achieving high mobility while minimizing off-current and static power consumption is critical for applications of two-dimensional field-effect transistors. Herein, a selenium (Se) sacrificial layer is introduced between the rhenium sulfide (ReS) semiconductor and source/drain electrode. With the Se layer and postannealing process, the ReS transistor significantly decreases the off-state current with a substantial increase in the on-state current density.
