Bis(dithienylethene)-based BINOL-derived phosphoric acid (DTE-BPA) has been developed as a light-controlled chiral organocatalyst for the first time. The photoinduced modulation of the reactivity and selectivity the open/close isomerization of the DTE scaffold led to superior light-controlled ability in the enantioselective aza-Friedel-Crafts reaction of aldimines with indoles. DFT studies showed that photoisomerization is accompanied by a shift of 1.1 p units between the open and closed isomers.

Article Synopsis
  • Sterically hindered diarylethenes with intrinsic chirality have potential for regulating chiral signals and controlling liquid crystals using light, as they can change properties through unique phototransformations.
  • Traditional methods for creating these chiral structures face challenges like limited separation efficiency and production scale, requiring advanced techniques like chiral HPLC.
  • This study introduces a new enantioselective olefination method to create intrinsic chiral diarylethenes directly from prochiral compounds, yielding high enantioselectivity and allowing for effective photoregulation in liquid crystals with excellent stability and minimal disorder.

The modulation of whole-cell activity presents a considerable challenge in biocatalysis. Conventional approaches to whole-cell catalysis, while having their strengths, often rely on complex and deliberate enzyme designs, which could result in difficulties in activity modulation and prolonged response times. Additionally, the activity of intracellular enzymes in whole-cell catalysis is influenced by temperature.

On the basis of Landau-de Gennes theory and the finite-difference iterative method, the autonomic modulation of chiral inversion in a cylindrical cavity with degenerate planar anchoring is investigated. Under the applied helical twisting power (inversely related to the pitch P), a chiral inversion can be achieved due to the nonplanar geometry effect, and the inversion capacity rises with the increase of the helical twisting power. The combined effect of the saddle-splay K_{24} contribution (corresponding to the L_{24} term in Landau-de Gennes theory) and the helical twisting power are analyzed.

Liquid crystalline polymers are attractive materials for untethered miniature soft robots. When they contain azo dyes, they acquire light-responsive actuation properties. However, the manipulation of such photoresponsive polymers at the micrometer scale remains largely unexplored.
