Background And Objectives: The middle fossa approaches are tremendously versatile for treating small vestibular schwannomas, selected petroclival meningiomas, midbasilar trunk aneurysms, and lesions of the petrous bone. Our aim was to localize the internal acoustic canal and safely drill the petrous apex with these approaches. This study demonstrates a new method to locate the internal acoustic canal during surgery in the middle fossa.

The nanosecond pulsed fibre laser (NsPFL) treatment is extensively employed to distinguish hospital surgical instruments (micro-surgical forceps, surgical blades, orthopaedic drills, and high-precision laparoscopic tools), which are generally composed of stainless steel. Nevertheless, if the laser parameters are not properly optimised, this process may unintentionally provoke corrosion. Maintaining the structural integrity of these materials is essential for ensuring patient safety and minimising long-term costs.

Objectives: Training of temporal bone drilling requires more than mastering technical skills with the drill. Skills such as visual imagery, bimanual dexterity, and stress management need to be mastered along with precise knowledge of anatomy. In otorhinolaryngology, these psychomotor skills underlie performance in the drilling of the temporal bone for access to the inner ear in cochlear implant surgery.
