The history of the Croatian pharmaceutical company PLIVA from the very beginning to the status of a recognisable European and global player is described. Special attention is paid to PLIVA's cooperation with the Croatian Nobel laureate Vladimir Prelog and the invention of the proprietary antibiotic azithromycin. The antibiotic was commercialised in cooperation with the US-based company Pfizer.

Given that proteins with minor variations in amino acid sequences cause distinct functional outcomes, identifying and quantifying similar proteins is crucial, but remains a long-standing challenge. Herein, we present a two-dimensional orthogonal fluorescence and chemiluminescence design strategy for the probe DCM-SA, which is sequentially activated by albumin-mediated hydrolysis, exhibiting light-up fluorescence and photo-induced cycloaddition generating chemiluminescence, enabling orthogonal signal amplification for discrimination of subtle differences between similar proteins. By orthogonalizing these dual-mode signals, a two-dimensional work curve of fluorescence and chemiluminescence is established to distinguish and quantify similar proteins HSA and BSA.

Vicinal bis(tetraarylphosphonium) salts have scarcely been reported in the literature. In this study, we demonstrate that visible-light-induced difunctionalization of -trifluoromethylsulfonylated diaryliodonium salts conveniently furnishes bis(phosphonium) salts without additional catalysts or photoinitiators. The methodology establishes a practical platform for the preparation of bis(phosphonium) salts using readily available tertiary phosphines.

The Heck reaction is one of the most well-known C-C (carbon-carbon) coupling reactions and was identified with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2010. These reactions have been broadly utilized to prepare a different spectrum of heterocycles with applications in agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. These reactions are commonly catalyzed by palladium due to its tolerance and expansive variousness of functional groups, which bears a remarkable power in creating C-C bonds.
