Fusion-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis of Technogenic-Waste-Derived Zeolites and Nanocomposites: Synthesis, Characterization, and Mercury (II) Adsorption. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

This study presents the synthesis of zeolites derived from coal fly ash (CFA) using the fusion-assisted alkaline hydrothermal method. The zeolites were synthesized by combining CFA and NaOH at a molar ratio of 1:1.2 under fusion temperatures of 500, 600, and 700 °C. Subsequently, the obtained zeolites were subjected to further modifications through the incorporation of magnetic (FeO) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs). The FeO NPs were introduced through co-precipitation of Fe(NO) and FeCl at a molar ratio of 1:1, followed by thermal curing at 120 °C. On the other hand, the Ag NPs were incorporated via ion exchange of Na with Ag and subsequent reduction using NaBH. The synthesized porous materials exhibited the formation of zeolites, specifically analcime and sodalite, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Additionally, the presence of FeO and Ag NPs was also confirmed by XRD analysis. The elemental composition analysis of the synthesized nanocomposites further validated the successful formation of FeO and Ag NPs. Nitrogen porosimetric analysis revealed the formation of a microporous structure, with the BET surface area of the zeolites and nanocomposites ranging from 48.6 to 128.7 m/g and pore sizes ranging from 0.6 to 4.8 nm. The porosimetric characteristics of the zeolites exhibited noticeable changes after the modification process, which can be attributed to the impregnation of FeO and Ag NPs. The findings of this research demonstrate the effectiveness of the fusion-assisted method in producing synthetic zeolites and nanocomposites derived from CFA. The resulting composites were evaluated for their potential application in the removal of mercury ions from aqueous solutions. Among the samples tested, the composite containing Ag NPs exhibited the highest adsorption capacity, reaching 107.4 mg of Hg per gram of composite. The composites modified with FeO NPs and Ag/FeO nanocomposites displayed adsorption capacities of 68.4 mg/g and 71.4 mg/g, respectively.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) presents a serious threat to health, highlighting the urgent need for more effective antimicrobial agents with innovative mechanisms of action. Nanotechnology offers promising solutions by enabling the creation of nanoparticles (NPs) with antibacterial properties. This study aimed to explore the antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-virulence effects of eco-friendly synthesized α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles (α-Fe₂O₃-NPs) against pathogenic bacteria.

Vacancy-Activated Surface Reconstruction of Perovskite Nanofibers for Efficient Lattice Oxygen Evolution.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

December 2024

School of Minerals Processing and Bioengineering, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan 410083, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in perovskites by inducing surface reconstruction through trace Ce-doped LaCeNiFeO nanofibers (LCNF-NFs), which improves their catalytic activity.* -
  • High oxygen vacancies in the LCNF-NFs lower the reconstruction potential and increase electrolyte access, leading to significant generation of self-reconstructed electroactive Ni/FeO(OH) species on the surface.* -
  • The restructured LCNF-NFs demonstrated superior performance with a lower Tafel slope of 50.12 mV dec and a reduced overpotential of 342.3 mV, making them highly efficient compared to conventional electrocatalysts.*

Iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO-NPs) are widely used in scientific and technological fields. Environmental concerns have been raised about residual FeO-NPs levels as their toxicity and bioaccumulative potential are not well understood. Oreochromis niloticus were exposed to nanoparticles of γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on improving plantlet regeneration in tissue culture by utilizing iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO-NPs) as a nutrient source in Murashige and Skoog (MS) media to enhance callus formation and control contamination.
  • - The results showed that FeO-NPs significantly increased callus induction and regeneration rates compared to regular MS media, with notable improvements in callus weight, diameter, and root/shoot numbers, indicating a more effective growth environment.
  • - Applying FeO-NPs as a foliar spray led to substantial increases in biomass, height, and chlorophyll content in two rice varieties, while also enhancing enzymatic activities that help plants respond to stress, suggesting that this approach could be beneficial for

Enhancement of the Piezocatalytic Response of La-Doped BiFeO Nanoparticles by Defects Synergy.

December 2024

CentraleSupélec, Laboratoire Structures, Propriétés et Modélisation des Solides, Université Paris-Saclay, UMR CNRS 8580, Gif-sur-Yvette, 91190, France.

Because of their intrinsic polarization and related properties, ferroelectrics attract significant attention to address energy transformation and environmental protection. Here, by using trivalent-ion-lanthanum doping of BiFeO nanoparticles (NPs), it is shown that defects and piezoelectric potential are synergized to achieve a high piezocatalytic effect for decomposing the model Rhodamine B (RhB) pollutant, reaching a record-high piezocatalytic rate of 21 360 L mol min (i.e.
