Compared to the general population, among people with adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) the diagnosis of obesity, hypertension, impaired carbohydrate and lipid metabolism is more common. The aformentioned disorders represent typical cardiovascular remodeling risk factors. The study was designed to assess the association between NFAIs, metabolic profile and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) as the predictive factor of atherosclerosis. The study included 48 patients with NFAI (16 men, 32 women, mean age 58.6 +/- 9 years) and 44 control participants (15 men, 29 women, mean age 57 +/- 7 years). Both groups were matched for age, gender and BMI. Subjects with history of myocardial infarction, stroke or diabetes mellitus (DM) were excluded. Participants underwent adrenal imaging, biochemical evaluation, and measurement of CIMT. Hormonal evaluation was conducted in AI patients. The NFAI group had significantly higher waist circumference ( < 0.01), higher systolic ( < 0.01) and diastolic blood pressure ( < 0.01), fasting insulin ( = 0.03) and glucose in the 2 h OGTT ( = 0.04) as well as higher CIMT ( < 0.01). Hypertension ( < 0.01) and IGT ( = 0.026) were more common in this group as well. There was a positive correlation between CIMT and cortisol levels in 1 mg dexamethasone suppression test (r = 0.33, = 0.02). Patients diagnosed with NFAIs, despite normal cortisol inhibition in the 1 mg dexamethasone test, still presented a number of metabolic abnormalities. The assessment of IMT may proove valuable in indicate the presence of early vascular remodelling in asymptomatic patients. The underlying mechanisms of these findings are still unknown, hence further studies are required.

Culture-dependent and -independent studies have provided access to symbiont genes and the functions they play for host sponges. Thus, this work investigates the diversity, presence of genes of pharmacological interest, biological activities and metabolome of the bacteria isolated from the sponges Aplysina caissara and Aplysina fulva collected on the southwestern Atlantic Coast. The genes for Polyketide Synthases types I and II and Nonribosomal Peptide Synthetases were screened in more than 200 bacterial strains obtained, from which around 40% were putatively novel.

Background: While several studies have suggested a connection between Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), a definitive analysis confirming the association between lipid abnormalities and HS based on actual lipid values is lacking. Previous research, using odds ratios from ICD codes, indicates links between elevated triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein levels with HS. However, these findings may not fully represent real-life situations, as no comprehensive analysis using actual lipid measurements has been performed.

Maternal obesity puts the offspring at high risk of developing obesity and cardio-metabolic diseases in adulthood. Here, we utilized a mouse model of maternal high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity that recapitulates metabolic perturbations seen in humans. We show increased adiposity in the offspring of HFD-fed mothers (Off-HFD) when compared to the offspring regular diet-fed mothers (Off-RD).

The microbiomes of host organisms and their direct source environments are closely linked and key for shaping microbial community dynamics. The relationship between these linked dynamics is largely unexplored because source substrates are usually unavailable. To address this current knowledge gap, we employed bacteriovorous nematodes as a unique model system, for which source substrates like rotting apples can be easily collected.

Breast cancer is a cancer with global prevalence and a surge in the number of cases with each passing year. With the advancement in science and technology, significant progress has been achieved in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer to make ends meet. The scientific intradisciplinary subject of "metabolomics" examines every metabolite found in a cell, tissue, system, or organism from different sources of samples.
