Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a lyophilised amniotic membrane (LAM) as a patch for the treatment of retinal breaks and to describe the structural changes at the implantation site.

Design: Prospective, interventional case series study. Patients with diabetic retinopathy and combined tractional and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

Cryopreservation of bovine sperm causes single-strand DNA breaks that are localized in the toroidal regions of chromatin.

J Anim Sci Biotechnol

October 2024

Biotechnology of Animal and Human Reproduction (TechnoSperm), Institute of Food and Agricultural Technology, University of Girona, S17003, Girona, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates sperm cryopreservation in cattle, focusing on the types and locations of DNA damage that occur during the freezing and thawing process, particularly whether this damage includes single-strand or double-strand breaks in the DNA.
  • - Results showed a significant increase in single-strand breaks post-cryopreservation, while double-strand breaks remained consistent before and after the freezing process, indicating that cryopreservation primarily affects DNA integrity through single-strand breakage.
  • - The research also found that DNA fragments shortened after cryopreservation predominantly come from regions linked to protamines, suggesting cryopreservation negatively impacts these specific parts of the sperm DNA, which is crucial for successful artificial insemination.

Study of glutaraldehyde-treated crosslinking protocols for placental decellularized matrix sponges.

Institute of Bio-thermal Science and Technology, Shanghai Co-innovation Center for Energy Therapy of Tumors, Shanghai Technical Service Platform for Cryopreservation of Biological Resources, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai 200093, China. Electronic address:

Extracellular matrix sponge plays a positive role in the wound healing process, but requires proper structural strength and biological properties. In order to solve the problem of lyophilized dissolution of placenta-derived sponge, glutaraldehyde was selected for use in the lyophilized crosslinking process to improve the necessary mechanical properties of the placental decellularization matrix sponge. In this work, the effects of three cross-linking methods of glutaraldehyde (Fumigation/Slurry/Soak) on the physical and biological characteristics of lyophilised sponges derived from placental acellular matrix was investigated.

Dehydration drives damage in the freezing of brittle hydrogels.

Sci Adv

August 2024

Department of Materials, ETH Zürich, 8093 Zürich, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • Freezing can damage soft, wet materials like hydrogels, but scientists were unsure why this happens.
  • Researchers found that when ice forms, it causes nearby water to move towards it, which dries out the surrounding hydrogel and causes it to crack.
  • Understanding this process can help scientists in areas like food storage and preserving cells when they freeze things.

Electric fields as effective strategies for enhancing quality attributes of meat in cold chain logistics: A review.

Food Res Int

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Agro-Products Processing, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Institute of Food Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing 100193, China. Electronic address:

Meat quality (MQ) is unstable during cold chain logistics (CCL). Different technologies have been developed to enhance MQ during the CCL process, while most of them cannot cover all the links of the cold chain because of complex environment (especially transportation and distribution), compatibility issues, and their single effect. Electric fields (EFs) have been explored as a novel treatment for different food processing.
