Rapid advancements in DNA sequencing technologies are providing new approaches for bacterial taxonomy. The genus is a member of the family , which consists of more than 150 genera. In this study, genome sequence analysis was conducted to revisit the taxonomic status of and , the only two species of this genus. Genome sequence based phylogeny analysis showed that the genus was non-monophyletic: , the type species of genus , was clustered with the type species of the genus , whereas formed a robust cluster with the only two species of the genus . The values of average amino acid identity, genome-wide average nucleotide identity, alignment fractions and some phenotypic features showed that was more closely related with the type species of the genus than with , and was more closely related with the only two species of the genus than with . Based on these results, we consequently propose that and should be reclassified as comb. nov. and comb. nov. respectively.

Background And Aims: Competition with sympatric diploid progenitor(s) hinders the persistence of polyploids. The hypothesis that polyploids escape from competition through niche shifts has been widely tested; however, niche escape is unlikely to completely avoid competition. Given species growing in less favorable environments likely have weaker competitive abilities, we hypothesize that polyploid populations tend to persist in areas where their progenitors with relatively low habitat suitability.
