Two parallel artificial membrane permeability assay (PAMPA) systems intended for emulating skin permeability have been characterized through the solvation parameter model of Abraham using multilinear regression analysis. The coefficients of the obtained equations have been compared to the ones already established for other PAMPA membranes using statistical tools. The results indicate that both skin membranes are similar to each other in their physicochemical properties. However, they are different from other PAMPA membranes (e.g., intestinal absorption and blood-brain PAMPAs), mainly in terms of hydrophobicity and hydrogen bonding properties. Next, all PAMPA membranes have been compared to relevant biological processes also characterized through the solvation parameter model. The results highlight that skin-PAMPA membranes are a very good choice to emulate skin permeability.

Vancomycin (Van) is a glycopeptide antibiotic commonly used as a last resort for treating life-threatening infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, such as and spp. However, its effectiveness is currently limited due to the rapidly increasing number of drug-resistant clinical strains and its inherent cytotoxicity and poor penetration into cells and specific regions of the body, such as the brain. One of the most promising strategies to enhance its efficacy appears to be the covalent attachment of cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) to the Van structure.

Mitragynine is an "atypic opioid" analgesic with an alternative mechanism of action and a favorable side-effect profile. Our aim was to optimize the alkaloid extraction procedure from kratom leaves and to determine and isolate the most relevant compounds capable of penetrating the central nervous system. The PAMPA-BBB study revealed that mitragynine and its coalkaloids, speciociliatine, speciogynine, and paynantheine, possess excellent in vitro BBB permeability.

Recent years have witnessed notable breakthroughs in the field of biotherapeutics. Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs) are novel molecules which used to degrade particular proteins despite the blockage by small drug molecules, which leads to a predicted therapeutic activity. This is a unique finding, especially at the cellular level targets degradations.

P. aeruginosa employs specific quorum sensing (QS) mechanisms to orchestrate biofilm formation, enhancing resistance to host defences. In physiological conditions, QS molecules permeate the lung environment and cellular membrane to reach the cytoplasmic Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) that is pivotal for activating the immune response against infection.

In this article, the relationship between the properties of different membranes (agar, chitosan, and agar + chitosan) and biodegradability in natural and sterilized soil was investigated. The membranes under investigation exhibited variations in the biodegradation process, a phenomenon closely linked to both the soil microbiota composition and their water affinity. Higher solubility in water and greater swelling tendencies correlated with shorter initiation times for the biodegradation process in soil.
