Haunting Messages: Online Videos and Public Belief in Paranormal Phenomena.

Cyberpsychol Behav Soc Netw

Department of Communication, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware, USA.

Despite broad skepticism within the scientific community regarding paranormal phenomena such as ghosts and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), many members of the public believe in these phenomena. Previous studies have argued that viewing paranormal-themed television-including documentary, reality, and news programming-can cultivate such beliefs. In addition, recent research suggests that the online video-sharing platform YouTube may serve as an important source of messages about fringe phenomena.

The "UFO" procedure.

Ann Cardiothorac Surg

November 2019

Department for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, Helios Clinic Siegburg, Siegburg, Germany.

The term "UFO" is not a medical term, but helps emphasize the extremely high degree of complexity of a surgical repair that is akin to someone observing an unidentified flying object. It involves replacement of the mitral and aortic valves with reconstruction of the intervalvular fibrous body (IVFB). Specific pathologies that render this operation necessary usually involve the IVFB, which is located between the aortic and mitral valves and constitutes a major portion of the fibrous skeleton of the heart.

Digital holographic microtomography is a promising technique for three-dimensional (3D) measurement of the refractive index (RI) profiles of biological specimens. Measurement of the RI distribution of a free-floating single living cell with an isotropic superresolution had not previously been accomplished. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study focusing on the development of an integrated dual-tomographic (IDT) imaging system for RI measurement of an unlabelled free-floating single living cell with an isotropic superresolution by combining the spatial frequencies of full-angle specimen rotation with those of beam rotation.

Inflammatory mediators, including free radicals such as nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), can contribute to neurodegenerative diseases in part by triggering protein misfolding. In this chapter, we will discuss a newly discovered pathway for this phenomenon and possible novel treatments. Excitotoxicity, defined as overstimulation of glutamate receptors, has been implicated in a final common pathway contributing to neuronal injury and death in a wide range of acute and chronic neurological disorders, ranging from Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) to stroke and trauma.
