Article Synopsis
  • An eight-year-old neutered crossbreed dog presented with severe skin lesions and signs of systemic illness, leading to a thorough hematologic assessment.
  • The tests revealed nonregenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and a high population of neoplastic mononuclear cells, ultimately diagnosing the dog with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
  • Despite findings of AML affecting multiple organs, the owner opted for euthanasia, marking this case as the first documented instance of ulcerative skin lesions linked to AML in a dog.

Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, Old Soutpan Road, Onderstepoort, Pretoria, 0110, South Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Canine babesiosis and ehrlichiosis are significant tick-borne diseases in South Africa, but Theileriosis is not well understood, and co-infections are common among dogs in the region.
  • The study aimed to assess the prevalence of co-infections with Ehrlichia canis or Theileria equi in dogs suffering from babesiosis in the Eastern Cape province, using data from 150 infected dogs over nearly a year.
  • Results showed that while Babesia rossi was present in almost all samples, co-infection with E. canis was only found in 2.0% of cases, and no significant associations were found between various dog characteristics or blood measures and co-infection.

A 1-year-old mixed breed dog initially presented with marked ascites due to a low-protein transudate resulting from portal hypertension. Laboratory evaluation revealed non-regenerative anemia, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, evidence of hepatic insufficiency [hypoalbuminemia, decreased urea, increased post-prandial bile acids, prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT)] and infection. Approximately a week later, the dog was declining and was euthanized.
