Published: December 2023

This review summarizes recent progress in the synergistic design strategy for thermoresponsive polymers possessing an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in aqueous systems. To achieve precise control of the responsive behavior of the UCST polymers, their molecular design can benefit from a synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding with other interactions or modification of the chemical structures. The combination of UCST behavior with other stimuli-responsive properties of the polymers may yield new functional materials with potential applications such as sensors, actuators, and controlled release devices. The advances in this area provide insight or inspiration into the understanding and design of functional UCST polymers for a wide range of applications.

Facile Synthesis of Functional Polytrithiocarbonates from Multicomponent Tandem Polymerizations of CS, Thiols, and Alkyl Halides.

Polytrithiocarbonates have attracted significant attention recently because of their good thermal stability, light refractivity, crystallinity, and mechanical properties; however, the exploration of their structures and functionalities has been limited by their synthetic approaches. Multicomponent polymerization featuring simple monomers, mild conditions, diversified product structures, and high efficiency could provide a powerful and versatile tool to synthesize various polytrithiocarbonates from commercially available monomers. Herein, a robust and efficient multicomponent tandem polymerization (MCTP) of CS, dithiols, and alkyl halides was developed in DMF with KCO at room temperature in air to synthesize 12 polytrithiocarbonates with diversified and systematically tuned structures, high molecular weights (s up to 37900 g/mol), and high yields (up to 93%).

The controlled co-assembly of biomacromolecules through tuneable interactions offers a simple and fascinating opportunity to assemble multiple molecules into a single entity with enhanced complexity and unique properties. Herein, our study presents a dynamic co-assembled system using the multistimuli responsive intrinsically disordered protein Rec1-resilin and the adhesive hydrophilic protein silk sericin (SS). We utilized advanced characterization techniques including circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and small/ultra-small angle neutron scattering (SANS/USANS) to elucidate the detailed co-assembly behavior of the system and its evolution over time and temperature.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising treatment strategy for malignant tumors. Photothermal agents which can achieve efficient photothermal conversion in the NIR-II region plays crucial roles in this remedy. Here, we report one type of thermo-responsive gold nanorod vesicles USGRV-17-AAG for combined NIR-II photothermal therapy and chemotherapy of solid tumors.

Triazoliums are a family of five-membered heterocyclic cations that contain three nitrogen and two carbon atoms. In contrast to the widely studied imidazolium cations, triazoliums are less explored. In terms of the chemical structure, triazolium replaces a carbon atom in the imidazolium cation ring with an electron-withdrawing nitrogen atom, which makes the triazolium more polarized.

Immobilization of enzymes in porous organic framework (POF) materials is popular strategy to stabilize enzymes. For such solid enzyme catalysis system, improving the catalytic efficiency is challenging due to the diffusion resistance from solid-liquid interface and inner pores. Here, UCST-pH dual responsive polymeric carrier (PEG-b-PAAm-b-P(GMA-co-AAc)) was synthesized to immobilize cytochrome c (Cyt c), which impart the reversibly insoluble-soluble property to the immobilized Cyt c.
