Microbial source tracking (MST) is a critical tool for identifying sources of human and animal fecal pollution in aquatic environments. To enhance human fecal pollution tracking, this study evaluated the performance characteristics of pBI143, a cryptic plasmid recently identified for potential MST applications. Nucleic acid samples from ten animal species were screened for pBI143, revealing its presence in a small number of pigs, cows, dogs, cats, and flying fox fecal samples.

Efforts to reduce the frequency, extent, and toxicity of harmful algal blooms (HABs) require knowledge about drivers of algal growth, toxin production, and shifts in phytoplankton community composition to cyanobacterial dominance. Although labile nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fuel primary production, micronutrients also play roles as the enzymatic engines that facilitate rapid and efficient growth and toxin production. Macro- and micronutrient availability can shape community composition and function by selecting for particular taxa.

The widespread presence of plastic pollution has become a challenge for both aquatic and terrestrial plants. Notably, nanoplastics (NPs) have been found to enter the root tissues and translocate to different organs of plants; however, most previous studies were performed using crop or vegetable seedlings, and the extent NPs accumulation in fruit tree plants, particularly citrus, and their impacts remains unclear. This study was designed to fill this gap by determining the uptake and accumulation of green, fluorescent polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) of two different sizes (20 nm and 50 nm in diameter) in citrus rootstock ('US-942') in an aeroponic system and their impact on plant growth and physiological functions, nutrient uptake, and root system architectural and anatomical traits.

Parkinson's Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder afflicting almost 12 million people. Increased understanding of its complex and heterogenous disease pathology, etiology and symptom manifestations has resulted in the need to design, capture and interrogate substantial clinical datasets. Herein we advocate how advances in the deployment of artificial intelligence models for Federated Data Analysis and Federated Learning can help spearhead coordinated and sustainable approaches to address this grand challenge.
