The treatment and reuse of hygiene wastewater is crucial to "close the loop" in the controlled ecological life support system (CELSS), and to guarantee longer space missions or planetary habitation. In this work, anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was applied for hygiene wastewater treatment, focused on surfactant degradation and microbial community succession. The removal efficiency of COD and surfactants was 90%∼97% and 80% with a urine source-separation strategy. The microbial community gradually shifted from methanogens to sulfur-metabolizing and surfactant-degradation bacteria, such as Aeromonas. Sulfate was a surfactant degradation product, which triggered sulfate reduction and methane inhibition. The activated carbohydrate and sulfur metabolism were the key mechanism of the microbial process for the excellent performance of AnMBR. This study analyzed the degradation mechanism from the perspective of microbial mechanism, offers a solution for CELSS hygiene wastewater treatment, and supports the future improvement and refinement of AnMBR technology.

To meet wastewater treatment quality standards for reuse, integrating advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) with Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) is promising. This study aimed to optimize AOPs (ozonolysis, UV photolysis, TiO photocatalysis) for polishing anaerobic filter (AF) effluent from DEWATS, as an alternative to constructed wetlands. This is a timely and important review that focuses on the appropriateness of established cleaning, disinfection and sterilization methods to safely and effectively address infectious fungal drug-resistant pathogens that can potentially contaminate reusable medical devices used in healthcare environment in order to mitigate the risk of patient infection. The release of the World Health Organisation (WHO) fungal priority pathogen list (FPPL) in 2022 highlighted the public health crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in clinically relevant fungal species. Contamination of medical devices with drug-resistant fungal pathogens (including those on the FPPL) in healthcare are rare events that are more likely to occur due to cross-transmission arising from lapses in hand-hygiene practices.
