The Cardiac Non Invasive Laboratories, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Background: Comprehensive cardiovascular assessment in normal pregnancy using advanced techniques has limited data.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate cardiovascular changes in normal pregnancy using two-dimensional/three-dimensional (3D) echo and applanation tonometry in healthy pregnant women.

Methods: Two-dimensional/Doppler, speckle tracking strain, 3D echocardiography, and vascular compliance by applanation tonometry were performed during the first, second, and third trimesters and postpartum.

Background: The support system for research activities has not been sufficiently established in clinical settings. A survey should be conducted to identify the causes of low research activity among pharmacists and the characteristics of pharmacists who could serve as mentors to build a support system at the regional level.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional survey was conducted with 156 pharmacists, including hospital and community pharmacists, who attended a webinar on research ethics held once a year in Mie Prefecture.

Article Synopsis
  • Near peer mentorship (NPM) programs aid medical students' well-being, but past studies often overlooked students' motivations for mentoring and the development of clinical skills.* -
  • A study from the University of Saskatchewan's PULSE program examined how autonomous motivation in mentoring relates to teaching competence and psychological well-being using self-determination theory.* -
  • Results indicated that higher autonomous motivation to mentor correlates with better teaching confidence and increased well-being, suggesting the importance of understanding motivations to design effective NPM programs in medical education.*

Background: Medical oxygen services are essential for the care of acutely unwell patients. We aimed to assess the effects of a multilevel, multicomponent health-system intervention on hypoxaemia detection, oxygen therapy, and mortality among neonates and children attending level IV health centres and hospitals in Uganda.

Methods: For this before-after intervention study, we included children who attended paediatric or neonatal wards of 24 level IV health centres and seven general or regional referral hospitals in the Busoga and North Buganda regions of Uganda between June 1, 2020, and June 30, 2022.

Effective and sustainable strategies are needed to address the burden of preventable deaths among children under-five in resource-constrained settings. The Tools for Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (TIMCI) project aims to support healthcare providers to identify and manage severe illness, whilst promoting resource stewardship, by introducing pulse oximetry and clinical decision support algorithms (CDSAs) to primary care facilities in India, Kenya, Senegal and Tanzania. Health impact is assessed through: a pragmatic parallel group, superiority cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT), with primary care facilities randomly allocated (1:1) in India to pulse oximetry or control, and (1:1:1) in Tanzania to pulse oximetry plus CDSA, pulse oximetry, or control; and through a quasi-experimental pre-post study in Kenya and Senegal.
