Aim: To compare the macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, optic nerve head (ONH) parameters, and retinal vessel density (VD) measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and analyze the correlations between them in the early, moderate, severe primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and normal eyes.

Methods: Totally 70 PACG eyes and 20 normal eyes were recruited for this retrospective analysis. PACG eyes were further separated into early, moderate, or severe PACG eyes using the Enhanced Glaucoma Staging System (GSS2). The GCIPL thickness, RNFL thickness, ONH parameters, and retinal VD were measured by SD-OCT, differences among the groups and correlations within the same group were calculated.

Results: The inferior and superotemporal sectors of the GCIPL thickness, rim area of ONH, average and inferior sector of the retinal VD were significantly reduced (all <0.05) in the early PACG eyes compared to the normal and the optic disc area, cup to disc ratio (C/D), and cup volume were significantly higher (all <0.05); but the RNFL was not significant changes in early and moderate PACG. In severe group, the GCIPL and RNFL thickness were obvious thinning with retinal VD were decreasing as well as C/D and cup volume increasing than other three groups (all <0.01). In the early PACG subgroup, there were significant positive correlations between retinal VD and GCIPL thickness (except superonasal and inferonasal sectors, =0.573 to 0.641, all <0.05), superior sectors of RNFL thickness (=0.055, =0.049). More obvious significant positive correlations were existed in moderate PACG eyes between retinal VD and superior sectors of RNFL thickness (=0.650, =0.022), and temporal sectors of RNFL thickness (=0.740, =0.006). In the severe PACG eyes, neither GCIPL nor RNFL thickness was associated with retinal VD.

Conclusion: The ONH damage and retinal VD loss appears earlier than RNFL thickness loss in PACG eyes. As the PACG disease progressed from the early to the moderate stage, the correlations between the retinal VD and RNFL thickness increases.

Early diagnosis is critical for providing a timely window for effective therapy in pulmonary fibrosis (PF); however, achieving this remains a significant challenge. The distinct honeycombing patterns observed in computed tomography (CT) for the primary diagnosis of PF are typically only visible in patients with moderate to severe disease, often leading to missed opportunities for early intervention. In this study, we developed a nanoprobe designed to accumulate at fibroblastic foci and loaded with the CT sensitizer iodide to enable effective early diagnosis of PF.

Early investigation revealed a reduced risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection among social contacts of COVID-19 vaccinated individuals, referred to as indirect protection. However, indirect protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection-acquired immunity and its comparative strength and durability to vaccine-derived indirect protection in the current epidemiologic context of high levels of vaccination, prior infection, and novel variants are not well characterized. Here, we show that both vaccine-derived and infection-acquired immunity independently yield indirect protection to close social contacts with key differences in their strength and waning.

Objective: To compare physical activity (PA) over midlife between (1) former collegiate athletes and non-athletes and (2) among athletes in different sports.

Methods: The Harvard Alumni Health Study (HAHS) is a prospective cohort study of male undergraduates who completed serial questionnaires regarding PA and health status between 1962 and 1993. PA was categorised by intensity (<3 METs, light; 3 to <6 METs, moderate; ≥6 METs, vigorous), and energy expenditure (kilocalories (kcal)/week) was estimated at each intensity and in total.

The initial management of acute pancreatitis (AP) is continually evolving. Goal-directed moderate fluid resuscitation is now preferred over more aggressive strategies. Antibiotics should be administered only when there is a proven or highly probable infection rather than for prophylactic purposes.
